Culmen International is hiring Senior Scientist (Bacteriologist, Drug Discovery) to provide support for the
Walter Reed Army Institute of Research Experimental Therapeutics Program (WRAIR ET) and will be onsite in Silver Spring, Maryland.

Experimental Therapeutics (ET) is a drug discovery and development enterprise created to protect military personnel from death, disease, and injury and meet Army and DOD mission requirements. While its historical focus has been radioprotection and parasitic disease, ET applies its core competencies of medicinal, synthetic, and analytical chemistry as well as clinical pharmacology to all therapeutic areas within the Medical Research and Development Command's portfolio. ET has a 75-year legacy of excellence in small molecule drug development, with over 65 Investigational New Drug (IND) applications submitted to the U.S. Food and Drug Administrations (FDA).



What You'll Do in Your New Role

    Lead in vitro testing for the Combating Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria (CARB) group
  • Lead, guide, and coordinate efforts within a multidisciplinary research group to execute in
    vitro and in vivo studies aimed at developing antibacterial small molecule drugs to prevent
    and/or treat complex wound infections in a prolonged care environment
  • Collaborate with in vivo team partners to assess potential efficacy of antibacterial small
    molecule drugs using the neutropenic mouse thigh infection model
  • Design and implement in vitro HTS assays (MIC, synergy) involving robotic liquid handlers to
    screen compound and large (~100 strains) bacterial libraries
  • Collect and analyze large datasets using analytical software to make detailed observations and
    meaningful interpretations of the results
    Communicate regularly with government and industry collaborators through written reports
    and oral presentations to provide project updates and conclusions of research findings
  • Prepare and finalize scientific documentation such as grants, SOPs, and tech transfer forms


Required Qualifications

  • Master's Degree biological sciences or equivalent.
  • US Citizen
  • 6+ years of relevant experience
  • Demonstrated experience in leading projects (personnel and research efforts), submitting proposals for research efforts, and performing data analysis and reporting.
  • Demonstrated subject matter expertise in design, development, validation, and performance of in vitro assays for antimicrobials, antivirals, and/or antibacterial drug development.
  • Demonstrated expertise with liquid-handling robotics, tissue culture, aseptic technique, and high content imaging.
  • Demonstrated expertise handling BSL 1 and 2 infectious agents, toxic chemicals, and blood-borne pathogens.

The determination of compensation at Culmen International, LLC is based on various factors such as location, the individual's unique combination of education, knowledge, skills, competencies, clearance level, experience, internal equity, contract-specific affordability, and organizational requirements. The projected compensation range for this position is $59,500 - $74,400 annually. This estimate represents the typical salary range for this position and is just one component of Culmen's total compensation package for employees.
