About the Department
NC State University is a land-grant institution with strong research, teaching, and extension programs in the agricultural and life sciences. Current enrollment is approximately 27,000 undergraduate and 10,000 graduate students.
The Crop and Soil Sciences Department is the largest of 12 departments within the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences ( CALS) consisting of 62 faculty, 168 staff and 10 USDA scientists. The department is unique among our U.S. and international peers due to our broad and intensive expertise spanning land use, agriculture, and environmental protection. The department offers three Associate of Applied Science ( AAS) degrees in the Agriculture Institute, and three Bachelor of Science degrees across five program areas (Agroecology, Agronomy, Crop Biotechnology, Soil Science, and Turfgrass Science). At the graduate level, we have M.S. and PhD programs in Crop Science and Soil Science. Current Departmental enrollment includes approximately 120 students in AAS programs, 161 undergraduate and 115 graduate students.
The Crop and Soil Sciences Department conducts cutting-edge research to improve food security and enhance agricultural systems. We also search for new approaches to protect soil and water resources from degradation associated with agricultural and urban land uses. Our research is conducted in well-equipped labs, greenhouses and the NC State Phytotron for controlled environment work. Additionally, we have access to an excellent field station system, comprising 18 stations, with a variety of environments and soils ranging from the mountains to the coastal plains and blacklands of Eastern North Carolina.

Crop and Soil Sciences is a department that encompasses research, extension and teaching. We develop future leaders in crop, soil and environmental sciences; improve crop plants and products; devise effective and sustainable crop production systems; develop effective and sustainable soil management techniques in agricultural and urban settings; and disseminate crop, soil and environmental science knowledge for the benefit of users and producers of food, feed, turfgrass, biofuels and fiber in North Carolina, the nation and the world.
