R&D Engineer (AI Application Engineer)

General Information

Hitachi Energy is seeking a R&D AI Application Engineer for its Technology Center group in their Raleigh, NC location. This position is a data scientist role focusing on the application of artificial intelligence on Transformer R&D projects. Our R&D Team is serving global technology development of distribution transformer business. Our business is power equipment manufacturing which involves various business processes from engineering to manufacturing. This position can be in the office or hybrid work setup. Candidates will be required to travel up to 15% (globally) based on project needs.

Your Responsibilities:

• Display technical expertise in AI data analytics focusing on a team of diversified technical competencies.
• Develop and oversee research and development projects, ensuring timely delivery, alignment with company's AI strategy, proper resource allocation and effective collaboration across teams and stakeholders.
• Propose project initiatives and value-added analytics that will drive business productivity
• Investigate the use cases and foster collaborations with 3rd parties such as AI service suppliers / universities etc.
• Display a proficiency in the application of machine learning in engineering design process, use of predictive modeling in engineering and manufacturing process, creation and maintenance of data warehouse, business intelligence initiatives and asset diagnostic algorithms.
• Use data visualization tools such as Power BI and Tableau to create professional quality dashboards and reports.
• Develop predictive models and utilize machine learning/data science techniques such as Hierarchical Clustering, Artificial Neural Networks, Ensemble Learning, Random Forest, Naive Bayes, etc.
• Consolidate SQL database from multiple sources, data cleaning and manipulation in preparation for analytics and machine learning.

Your Background:

• BS in Computer Science, Data Science, Electrical, Mechanical or related discipline and at least 2 years of related working experience; OR MS/PhD in related field.
• Candidate must already have work authorization that would permit them to work for Hitachi Energy in the United States.
• Proven experience in managing technical projects, including planning, execution and delivery.
• Strong communication and presentation skills; able to effectively communicate complex technical topics with stakeholders at all levels.
• Proven expertise in programming languages including Python, SQL and Spark.
• Expertise in Machine Learning and Deep Learning models particularly in the field of NLP and Text analysis (LLMs, RAG framework).
• Proven experience of deploying enterprise level AI and GenAI technologies on industrial products (e.g.: AI Chatbots, Text Summarization, Search etc.)
• Experience in utilizing cloud-based environment for developing and deploying machine learning solutions such as Azure Machine Learning and Azure Databricks.
• Ability to quickly grasp concepts from a field that is not one's core competency; A fast learning generalist capable of solving problem independently and resourceful in matrixed corporate environment.
• Preferred qualification
• Experience with power product (distribution transformers) or similar industrial goods manufacturing environment.
• Member of IEEE / Cigre organizations related to transformer technologies.
• Familiar with modern SDLC and project management process/tools
• Has several publications or patents related to AI applications in industrial goods manufacturing field.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Power BI
• Working knowledge of Vector Databases and Vector Indexes.
• Experience with Python (Scikit-learn, XGBoost, Tensorflow, Pytorch, Numpy, Pandas) and C# programming language.
