Building Examiner

Education Requirements

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Architecture, Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field is highly desirable.
• Relevant technical training in building codes, construction, or design is a plus.

Experience Requirements

• Minimum of two (2) years of experience performing municipal inspection services for residential, commercial, or industrial properties.
• One (1) year of experience performing building plan reviews for a public agency; OR
• One (1) year of progressively responsible experience in architecture, engineering design, drafting, construction, or code compliance.
• Knowledge of building codes, construction methods, and permit review processes.

Preferred Qualifications

• ICC Plans Examiner Certification preferred.
• Ability to obtain ICC Plans Examiner Certification within 12 months of hire.
• Strong understanding of building codes, ordinances, and regulatory requirements.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving abilities.
• Experience working with architects, engineers, contractors, and government agencies.

Physical Capabilities

• Ability to sit, stand, and move throughout an office environment.
• Frequent use of computers and plan review software.
• Ability to review large construction plans, technical drawings, and supporting documentation.
• Ability to attend meetings and occasionally visit project sites as needed.

Job Duties

• Review residential, commercial, industrial, and multifamily construction plans for code compliance.
• Evaluate architectural drawings, specifications, and supporting documents.
• Coordinate reviews with Planning, Fire, Public Works, Utilities, and other departments.
• Respond to code-related questions from contractors, architects, engineers, homeowners, and the public.
• Assist inspectors with complex construction issues and code interpretations.
• Prepare correction notices and maintain accurate permit and project records.
• Support permit issuance activities, fee verification, and customer service functions.
• Ensure timely processing of permit applications while maintaining regulatory compliance.
