Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The mission of the School of Nursing is to enhance and improve the health and well-being of the people of North Carolina and the nation, and, as relevant and appropriate, the people of other nations, through its programs of education, research, and scholarship, and through clinical practice and community service. The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Nursing has been the leader in nursing education in North Carolina throughout its history. Established in 1950, it was the first school of nursing in North Carolina to offer a four-year baccalaureate nursing degree program followed by the first master's degree program, the first continuing education program for nurses, first doctoral program, and first accelerated BSN option to students with college degrees. Today, the School is renowned for its academic programs, its research and its commitment to clinical and community service within state, national and global communities.
Position Summary
Active-duty service members (ADSMs) in the U.S. Army experience elevated risk of HPV-associated cancers, particularly oropharyngeal cancers, with risk amplified by factors such as higher tobacco use among young adult men. Despite this risk - and universal healthcare access - HPV vaccination rates remain low, especially among male service members. Healthcare providers and clinical staff play a critical role in vaccine uptake, as provider recommendation is the strongest predictor of HPV vaccination.
However, little is known about the barriers and facilitators military providers and clinical staff face when recommending HPV vaccination within military health systems. This study addresses that gap by generating actionable insights to improve cancer prevention, military readiness, and health equity within one of the largest U.S. military installations. We are seeking a Research Assistant (RA) to support a qualitative study led by Dr. Lisa Mansfield (School of Nursing) examining provider and clinical staff perspectives on HPV vaccination for ADSMs at Womack Army Medical Center ( WAMC), Fort Bragg, NC. This is a qualitative research role.
The RA will play a central role in conducting semi-structured interviews and supporting qualitative data analysis. The position is ideal for applicants seeking hands-on experience in rigorous qualitative methods, applied public health research, and community-engaged work in a military health setting.
Key Responsibilities
* Conduct semi-structured, virtual or in-person interviews with healthcare providers and clinical staff
* Assist with participant recruitment and scheduling interviews
* Support qualitative data analysis (thematic analysis, coding, codebook development, ATLAS.ti experience)
* Contribute to manuscripts and presentations
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Bachelor's degree; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Management Preferences

  • Background in public health, epidemiology, nursing or social sciences
  • Experience with qualitative research methods or analysis
  • Experience conducting interviews and coding qualitative data
  • Strong interest in cancer prevention, HPV vaccination or health equity

Special Physical/Mental Requirements
Campus Security Authority Responsibilities
