THE POSITION

Join the Department of General Services as a Carpenter 1 and help keep state facilities safe, functional and welcoming. This role allows you to use hands-on skills to support repairs, improvements and daily maintenance across multiple buildings. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

This position provides skilled carpentry work that supports the construction, repair and maintenance of structures throughout the Capitol and Annex Complex. The role involves planning tasks, using trade tools, coordinating materials, and completing a wide range of building projects. As a Carpenter 1, you will perform the following duties:

  • Project Planning: Plan and lay out work based on drawings, blueprints, sketches and instructions while selecting proper materials
  • Construction Work: Perform alterations, repairs and maintenance on buildings, roofs, floors, doors, fixtures and related structures
  • Bench Operations: Operate saws, planers, lathes, routers and other woodworking equipment for skilled bench work
  • Installation Tasks: Install partitions, modular furniture, trim, flooring, ceiling tile and hardware to ensure accurate alignment
  • Equipment Use: Use trade equipment such as forklifts, loaders, trailers, man lifts and dump trucks to complete assigned tasks
  • General Maintenance: Remove snow, relocate signage, maintain tools, assist other shops and drive to designated work locations

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with 30-minute lunch.
  • Essential Position - Required to report to work during emergencies and office closings. - Mandatory snow and ice removal.
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
  • Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Successful completion of the Building Trades Trainee program (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or
  • Three years of experience in the construction, installation, repair, restoration, or maintenance of structures and articles made from wood, composite, and wood substitute materials; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training.

Special Requirement:

  • This position requires possession of an active motor vehicle license.

Additional Requirement:

  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.
