Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The primary purpose of the Police Department is to support the University's core mission of teaching, research, and public service by providing comprehensive and professional police services. The Department's staff protects and serves the University community by enforcing the laws of North Carolina, policies of the University, preserving and optimizing resources and by maintaining an environment that fosters higher education and community-oriented service.
Primary Purpose of Position
This is a high-level, administrative, supervisory or managerial law enforcement position at a University campus or other State facility. With full powers of arrest, employees enforce the laws of the State and the United States Government. Employees have law enforcement authority ranging from traffic control to criminal investigations within a specific geographic jurisdiction associated with State property. Work involves high-level, strategic and daily supervision and/or management of a unit or division of officers and functions or other departmental personnel in their responses to routine calls, emergencies, and other law enforcement services provided. Employees evaluate appropriateness of officer responses; designate assignments; direct needed resources; and interpret laws, ordinances, and department policies and procedures. Duties may include orientation and training of officers, inspections of officers and/or other departmental personnel on a shift or team, conducting pre-shift briefings, conducting broader, regularly scheduled reviews of their respective divisions, review of all reports and investigations accomplished during a shift, activity coordination, discipline and internal investigations, conducting performances reviews, personnel and task assignments, providing input concerning operational planning, researching and contributing to the development of agency policies and procedures, drafting and presenting documents, plans, or other operational matters, and other activities as directed by this person's supervisor.
Minimum Education, Knowledge, Skills, and Experience
A minimum of a bachelor's degree or greater and 7 years of sworn law enforcement officer experience or an associate's degree and 9 years of sworn law enforcement officer experience. At least 3 years of the experience must have been in a supervisory role equivalent to a Police Sergeant or greater. Certification from NC CJETSC as a commissioned police officer or certification eligible for out of state lateral hires.

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills, and Experience
Bachelor's degree and 7 years of sworn law enforcement experience in higher education, or an associate's degree and 9 years of such experience, including at least 3 years in a supervisory role equivalent to Police Sergeant or higher.
