We have an opportunity at our corporate offices in Washington D.C. for an External Affairs Director (Hybrid) on our Advocacy team. This is a hybrid position reporting into our Washington, DC office, requiring 3 days a week in the office.

This role drives engagement and
partnership-building with medical associations and other key stakeholders to
advance the AMA's advocacy in the Medicare physician payment and broader
healthcare landscape. This position leads strategic outreach initiatives and
communications focused on influencing health policy, fostering stakeholder
relationships, and elevating awareness of physician and patient issues and
solutions.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Outreach Development & Execution

  • Collaborate closely with medical societies and other key stakeholders to identify priorities and facilitate joint advocacy efforts
  • Organize and facilitate stakeholder convenings, forums, and collaborative programs addressing Medicare and health policy challenges and opportunities for physicians
  • Identify and analyze emerging issues in proposed federal health care policy, including priority in terms of the AMA Advocacy objectives
  • Develop key issue objectives and communication plans to address those topics, collaborating across Advocacy and the AMA to develop messaging to policymakers, stakeholders, and others
  • Collaborate with colleagues to develop strategies to address issues
  • Support the development of targeted web and social media education and advocacy opportunities

External Collaboration & Relationship Management
  • Guide development of joint initiatives with external organizations to advance Medicare physician payment reforms and AMA's advocacy priorities
  • Initiate and maintain liaison with health professional organizations and other organizations in Washington to promote AMA's advocacy agenda
  • Collaborate with AMA colleagues to advocate AMA positions to stakeholders
  • Liaise with external organizations including identifying potential stakeholders and arranging conference participants and speakers

Subject Matter Expertise
  • Monitor federal regulatory and legislative activities Collaborate with AMA Advocacy to prepare briefings for leaders representing the AMA in official meetings
  • Lead coalition meetings and make public presentations on behalf of the AMA, as appropriate
  • As subject matter expert, educate AMA colleagues and others about Medicare physician payment policies and other issues of interest to patients and physicians
  • Applies existing AMA Principles and Policy in the development of new ideas and assist AMA business unit understanding of federal policymaking and legislative and regulatory implications

May include other responsibilities as assigned

REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Bachelor's degree required; Law degree or master's degree strongly preferred in Public Health, Health Policy, Business or Political Science

  2. 10+ years relevant experience. 5+ years' experience working with a member of Congress, Federal agencies, consulting/law firm, national health care organizations, or with national medical specialty societies on federal government health issues

  3. Expertise regarding Medicare legislation and regulation is required

  4. Demonstrated record of strong teamwork and collaborative skillset, particularly in strategic initiatives

  5. Excellent interpersonal skills crucial for success, including relationship building and maintenance skills

  6. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including strong presentation skills

  7. Experience convening diverse stakeholders required

  8. Some travel required

This role is an exempt position, and the salary range for this position is $153,355 - $207,144. This is the lowest to highest salary we believe we would pay for this role at the time of this posting. An employee's pay within the salary range will be determined by a variety of factors including but not limited to business consideration and geographical location, as well as candidate qualifications, such as skills, education, and experience.
