Posting Summary
The Department of Marine and Coastal Sciences seeks to appoint three Class 8 Non-Teaching Coadjutants as MATE (Marine Advanced Technology Education) Outreach Coordinators to support educational outreach, workforce development, and student engagement activities.
The effort will focus on working directly with Rutgers faculty to develop a "Competition of Profilers" initiative that connects real-world ocean observing, engineering design, and student-driven problem solving. Coordinators will gain first-hand experience with the MATE competition ecosystem, including participation in the 2026 MATE World Championship, and will help launch Rutgers student teams for the 2026-2027 MATE competition season, which includes a mission focused on profiling floats operating under ice.
These MATE Outreach Coordinators will report to Dr. Oscar Schofield, Distinguished Professor and Department Chair, and will work collaboratively with Rutgers faculty, students, and external partners to advance experiential learning opportunities in ocean technology and ocean observing systems.

The positions are 100% grant-funded and are contingent upon the availability of project funding.

Qualifications






Minimum Education and Experience
Bachelor's degree in a relevant field and a minimum of two years of experience in education, outreach, mentoring, STEM programming, or a related area.

Equivalent education, experience, and training may be substituted as appropriate.
Certifications/Licenses
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Must have a Bachelor's degree in education, science, engineering, marine science, environmental science, technology, or a related field.

Must have two (2) years of experience in education, outreach, student mentoring, STEM programming, workforce development, or a related field.
Preferred Qualifications

  • Teaching or educational outreach experience.
  • Experience mentoring students or advising student organizations.
  • Experience with STEM competitions, project-based learning, robotics, engineering, ocean sciences, or environmental sciences.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with faculty, students, and external partners.

Physical Demands and Work Environment
Requires the ability to perform routine office tasks, communicate effectively, attend meetings and outreach events, travel as needed.

Program Overview

The MATE ROV (Remotely Operated Vehicle) Competition uses underwater robotics to inspire and challenge students to apply scientific, engineering, and technical skills to real-world problems. The competition engages K-12, community college, and university students from around the world in workplace-based missions while encouraging teamwork, innovation, networking, and interaction with industry and academic professionals.
