Job Summary

As directed by Clinical Laboratory Manager, provide clinical and medical laboratory support including but not limited to hematological determinations, microbiology, chemistry, parasitology and urinalysis; oversee the receiving and processing of samples. Perform a variety of laboratory tests (ranging from but not limited to chemistry, hematology, immunology, and microbiology) and diagnostic procedures to assist veterinarians (and researchers) in diagnosing, monitoring, treating and preventing diseases among the CNPRC NHP Colony. Provide accurate, timely and effective testing of samples to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of disease in a regulatory and GLP compliance environment and adhering to quality assurance protocols. Provide flow cytometry instrumentation service and support contributing to the operation and maintenance of flow cytometry equipment, for the analysis and sorting of samples by flow cytometry/FACS. Provide technical support for the flow cytometry carrying out essential quality control procedures, instrument maintenance and troubleshooting.

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

  • California State License for Clinical Laboratory Science or equivalent specialty license as defined in Division 2, Chapter 3 of the California Business and Professional Code, such as a Clinical Microbiologist Scientist, Clinical Chemistry Scientist, Clinical Hematology Scientist, or Clinical Immno Hematology Scientist, if working only in those subspecialties
  • Licensed by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) as a Medical Laboratory Scientist (M.L.S.)
  • Proof of all required License(s) and Certification(s) due at time of hire.
  • Education and training in Comparative Pathology or related field and/or the equivalent combination of education, training, and prolonged study and professional experience from which comparable skills can be acquired.
  • Completion of a Clinical Laboratory Scientist six-months to one-year internship program.
  • Demonstrated clinical laboratory experience in the following areas of medical laboratory setting: microbiology, immunology, hematology, urology, flow cytometry, clinical chemistry, biochemistry, toxicology, and immunohematology and parasitology.
  • Experience and applied knowledge of quality control methods and procedures appropriate to a clinical laboratory; proper safety precautions and procedures utilized in handling all types of laboratory specimens, reagents, chemicals and hazardous waste.
  • Experience to perform standard, complex, and non-routine clinical laboratory tests, accurately and with skill. Maintain records and prepare technical, factual reports of test results; and prepare accurate written reports.
  • Experience to assess normal and abnormal test results.
  • Applied knowledge of lab testing, principles, and regulatory requirements and demonstrated skills to operate a variety of laboratory instrumentation, including the ability to calibrate, troubleshoot, adjust and maintain highly sensitive laboratory equipment according to manufacturer's specifications and established laboratory, procedures and make necessary emergency equipment repairs.
  • Skills to establish and maintain effective working relationships with service technicians, veterinary staff, management, and peers. Ability to train all levels of laboratory personnel in technical laboratory procedures and equipment usage.
  • Proficiency and knowledge of MS Office, scientific software, statistical software, and lab information systems.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in medical technology or related field of clinical medical technology.
  • Experience performing complex flow cytometry such as cell sorting.
  • Experience and applied knowledge of quality control methods and procedures appropriate to a clinical laboratory; proper safety precautions and procedures utilized in handling all types of laboratory specimens, reagents, chemicals and hazardous waste.
  • Skills to work independently in a clinical laboratory (making up buffers, calculating concentrations, interpreting standard curves).Ability to train all levels of laboratory personnel in technical laboratory procedures and equipment usage.
  • Knowledge of principles of quality control, standardization, and instrument calibration. Ability to perform routine maintenance and troubleshooting on standard lab equipment.
  • Knowledge of laboratory equipment and testing to perform quality control checks and troubleshooting of instrumentation.

Department Overview

The CNPRC Clinical Laboratory is a full-service in-house medical laboratory that operates under GLP regulations, providing diagnostic testing and support for both clinical care needs of the colony and for the research being conducted using nonhuman primates. The Clinical Laboratory has validated tests and reference values on nonhuman primates that are available for all tests performed in the Clinical Laboratory ranging from hematology, cytology, urinalysis, parasitology, chemistry, microbiology, serum banking, and flow cytometry. The Senior Clinical Laboratory Scientist performs and provide instructions to technicians various chemical, microscopic, microbiologic, hematologic, and serological tests to obtain data used in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases in nonhuman primates. Assists in monitoring and provide training to technical staff in performance of laboratory tests and recording of results. Assists in training of Clinical Laboratory interns. Perform equipment maintenance, Quality Control activities, and proficiency testing activities within the Clinical Laboratory.The California National Primate Research Center (CNPRC) is an Organized Research Unit which conducts interdisciplinary research programs on significant human health related problems where non-human primates are the animal models of choice. In addition to its major efforts in the area of research, the CNPRC is also committed to its missions of teaching and service.
