The Department of Public Safety serves the Creighton community through proactive patrolling, rapid response, outreach, security technology, and safe transportation. Our goal is to create a secure environment for all community members. The team consists of 3 shift managers, 3 lead officers, 18 unarmed and armed officers, and 6 dispatchers. Public Safety is responsible for campus security, enforcement, emergency management, campus safety, and parking on the Omaha Campus.

A public safety manager performs all duties of an officer while also overseeing, supervising, and training public safety officers and dispatchers. The manager coordinates responses to emergencies on campus. They develop and update policies, collaborate with local law enforcement, provide safety training, maintain incident records, and prepare reports for administration. Additionally, they manage safety measures for campus events for public safety operations.

Armed Officers Only: While the core duties and essential functions of a Public Safety Officer role are similar for armed and unarmed officers, those who work in an armed capacity will be responsible for safely and securely maintaining and carrying a University-owned firearm and complying with the department standard operating procedures (SOPs) governing the use of force. In addition to the essential functions, armed officers will maintain competencies for firearms use, including mandatory training and frequent cleaning of firearms on a continual and consistent basis. All Managers are required to be Armed.

Essential Functions:

Administrate shift reports, assign subordinates to tasks, establish shift work schedules, and manage personnel issues.

Perform all duties of a patrol officer. Respond to calls for service and solve problems. Patrol campus areas by vehicle, bike, or on foot, assisting University students, employees, and visitors, and responding quickly to emergency threats. Enforce parking violations, secure buildings and unlock as needed, and provide motorists with jump starts and other vehicle assistance. Respond to fire and security alarms, providing first aid and initial situational assessment until local fire and rescue first responders arrive.

Conduct training as needed.

Review reports and surveillance camera data as needed.

Education & Experience:



  • High School Diploma required, Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Three years related work experience required.
  • One year of supervisory experience preferred
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a City of Omaha firearms weapons permit.
  • CPR and first aid (training provided)


In addition to the required Education and Experience stated above, all Officers will require successful completion of a pre-employment screening process which includes:



  • a criminal background check
  • motor vehicle report,
  • drug screen
  • medical /physical exam
  • psychological testing and evaluation
  • firearms training must qualify (on an annual basis) to carry a semi-automatic pistol by meeting the standard mandated by the Nebraska State Qualification Course.


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities



  • Manages and leads consistent with the mission of the University.
  • Knowledge of the Clery Act, FERPA, VAWA, and other applicable state and local laws governing campus security
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, including writing, reviewing, and editing accurate incident reports.
  • Experience with community policing programs and community engagement
  • Ability to maintain a calm, balanced perspective and to make sound objective decisions in stressful situations.
  • Ability to coach team members to improve performance and team dynamics.
  • Manages work schedules to ensure adequate staffing and implements patrol strategies.
  • Coordinates special events while working with internal and external departments and community partners.
  • Provides and ensures staff customer service.


Armed Officers must be knowledgeable with firearms usage and cleaning techniques.

Licenses / Certifications



  • Possess, for at least two years, a valid United States driver's license issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles from the Vehicle Operator state of residence. Must have a clean driving record.
  • CPR and first aid (training provided).
  • Armed officers must annually qualify to carry a semi-automatic pistol by meeting the standard mandated by the Nebraska State Qualification Course.
