Apheresis Staff Nurse / 40 Hours Variable Rotation / Kraft Family Blood Donor Center BWH
GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:
The Kraft Family Blood Donor Center registered nurse is expected to ensure donor and patient health and safety before, during and after donor room procedures. Competency with apheresis and therapeutic procedures and associated equipment and in monitoring collections to achieve blood components of the highest quality. Practice must follow departmental Standard Operating Procedures and the Nursing Department Clinical Practice Manual. Must have a working knowledge of AABB, FDA, FACT, and other regulatory agency guidelines.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Follows the donor qualification standards defined in the departmental Standard Operating Procedures, Interviews HPC|MNC donors to assess eligibility, and takes appropriate action. Ensures pre-procedure documentation is complete prior to initiating HPC/MNC collection. Follows Site Preparation SOP to prep venipuncture site(s). Maintains continuity of donor and product identification. Performs label verification with another nurse. Observes donors/patients for adverse reactions and take appropriate action as required. Performs the following apheresis procedures:
- HPC\MNC Collections
- Photopheresis
- Red Cell Depletion\Exchanges
- Plasma Exchanges
- Therapeutic Phlebotomy
- White Cell and Platelet Depletions
- Demonstrates knowledge of the operation and maintenance standards for apheresis equipment and other equipment used in the department.
- Follows industry manufacturing standards-cGMP, cGTP standards and FACT.
- Demonstrates intravenous insertion skills. Troubleshoots instrument problems and takes instruments out of service following the Equipment SOP.
- Participates in the validation of new equipment and processes.

To qualify you must have:

  • Minimum of 3-5 years of nursing experience in apheresis, oncology, bone marrow transplant, or research nursing required.

  • Cellular Therapies/Stem Cell, Outpatient/Ambulatory experience strongly preferred.

  • IV insertion skills required.

  • Research and clinical trial management experience strongly preferred.

  • Strong computer skills preferred.

Education and License:

  • Graduate of an approved school of nursing with current registration in Massachusetts.

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing is required. Experience can be accepted in lieu of a degree.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Be able to work as an effective member of a multidisciplinary team.

  • Demonstrate skills in critical thinking, problem solving, and ability to make independent decisions.

  • Understand special needs and behaviors of age groups of the population served: all age groups, infants to geriatric.

Working Conditions:

  • Be able to work in clinic and office settings with possible exposure to infectious diseases through airborne transmission or contact with blood or body fluids.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Supervise assistive personnel as appropriate in the provision of patient care.
