JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS

We are searching for a self-disciplined, highly motivated, and customer service-oriented student to join the Human Resources Office at the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State. This role will bea mixture of day-to-day responsibilities, as well as special projects, in a fast-paced, confidential environment. This internship offers a close-up view to the operation of a human resources department and provides opportunities to shadow different areas of human resources.

You will:

  • Perform general administrative tasks, to include: greet visitors and answer phone and emails, provide directions or information, and address routine inquiries; distribute incoming mail, documents, awards, and supplies; and maintain office files and office supplies inventory

  • Generate and review reports and spreadsheets; proofread documents for accuracy; create and send routine memos and letters from established templates; update data and track changes

  • Support meeting, event, and onboarding coordination by organizing schedules and locations, sending reminders, and managing followup actions

  • Assist with routine travel arrangements and expense reports

  • Assist with various human resource and talent acquisition related projects

Required Skills/Experience areas include:

  • Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Outlook)

  • Proven success in environments where various forms of communication and organizational skills were crucial to be effective

  • Motivation and desire to learn and grow professionally with the ability to use discretion in handling confidential and sensitive information

Students pursuing a degree in Human Resources or Business will be given preference. This is a paid internship located at ARL's main laboratory at the University Park campus; relocation and housing are not provided.

This opportunity is eligible for internship credit under Penn State LA 495. Options are available to work up to 40 hours during the summer semester and up to 20 hours per week during the fall and spring semesters.

BACKGROUND CHECKS/CLEARANCES

Employment with the University will require successful completion of background check(s) in accordance with University policies. All positions at ARL require candidates topossess the ability to obtain a government security clearance; you will be notified during the interview process if this position is subject to a government background investigation.
