QA/QC Technician II (Certified Welding Inspector - CWI)

Job Summary

The QA/QC Technician II (CWI) is responsible for assigned project-specific Quality Control programs and site-specific plans from project initiation through completion. Conducts quality control inspections on materials, welding activities, and installations at various stages of the production process to ensure compliance with established quality, safety, and reliability standards. Captures and analyzes quality data to confirm compliance or identify deviations and recommends enhanced methods, procedures, and standards

Essential Duties

  • Performs Quality Assurance role on assigned job sites/projects, including quality walks, inspections, validating work per plans/specifications, maintaining punch lists, and coordinating field testing.
  • Conducts visual weld inspections in accordance with AWS, ASME, and applicable codes as a Certified Welding Inspector.
  • Reviews and verifies WPS, PQRs, welder qualifications, and weld logs for compliance.
  • Monitors welding processes (SMAW, GTAW, GMAW, FCAW, etc.) to ensure adherence to approved procedures.
  • Coordinates and witnesses NDT/NDE (RT, UT, MT, PT) activities where required.
  • Ensures material traceability, heat number verification, and documentation accuracy.
  • Schedules and observes field testing of complete systems as part of overall QC efforts.
  • Reviews plans and specifications to ensure installations match design requirements.
  • Acts as liaison between office and field to minimize quality issues.
  • Develops and maintains methods for collecting and analyzing quality data.
  • Identifies nonconformances (NCRs), performs root cause analysis, and drives corrective actions.
  • Supports commissioning activities and ensures systems meet quality standards prior to turnover.
  • Promotes continuous improvement and Lean practices to reduce waste and cost.
  • Participates in project activities including planning, installation, materials management, and prefabrication opportunities.

Minimum Requirements

Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • Bachelor's degree in Quality Assurance or related field preferred

Certifications:

  • AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) - Required
  • Additional certifications (ASNT Level II, API 510/570/653) - Preferred

Experience:

  • 2-4+ years of QA/QC experience in mechanical, piping, fabrication, or welding environments
  • Experience in commercial mechanical/plumbing or industrial construction preferred
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Strong knowledge of QA/QC principles and welding inspection standards (AWS, ASME, API)
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, isometrics, and weld symbols
  • Understanding of data analysis and quality metrics
  • Excellent communication and coordination skills
  • High attention to detail with a results-driven approach
