Location:Best Friends Pet Adoption Center (307 W Broadway, New York, NY 10013) Hiring Range: This position's hiring range is anticipated to be $24 per hour to $26 per hour, depending on experience, plus great benefits! Schedule: This role's schedule is likely to be Sunday - Thursday, 8 am - 5 pm (onsite), but is subject to change. PositionSummary:Volunteer Coordinatorsare responsible forthe daily functions and growth ofvolunteer engagementinourlifesaving and advocacyprograms. They act with urgency to accomplish important objectives and play a direct role in achieving Best Friends Animal Society's no-kill mission and organizational success.Coordinators may receive intensive assignments in a particular program, based on organizational needs.Volunteercoordinatorshave an increased level of responsibility or skills, and the ability to make on-the-spot decisions toaccomplishobjectives. Coordinate and conduct volunteer engagement programs; introduce, recruit, and engage withorganizations, individuals, and stakeholders to develop andmaintainmutually beneficial relationships;implementBest Friendsengagementand advocacystrategies; support strategiesthrough communications, events/meetings, service delivery, or other methods. Evaluateoperationalneeds:develop,and supportgroupandindividualvolunteer partnershipstoimplementprograms to meetthose needs,connectingcommunitymembers withthe programs and organizationsthey can be a part of, or thatcan provide help. Lead and empower volunteers and volunteer teams in support of programs with the goal ofutilizingvolunteers to the greatest extent possible to expand Best Friends lifesaving capacity; deliver and lead superior customer service. Work collaboratively with andassistBest Friends' team members in all areas of operations to develop, evolve, and implement efficient processes to achieve lifesaving goals; follow policies, procedures, and task lists,includingaccurateandtimelycommunications, work completion, data entry, and recordkeeping. Maintain a safe workplace, value, and model safe work practices, adhering to organizational safety practices and rules, and addressing or communicating to leadership about unsafe practices and conditions. Travel could be up to 10% -primarily within the region.
Skills and Experience:
A minimum of 1 year of experience leadingand organizing volunteersand implementingprogramsis required. Experience in supporting, engaging with, and developing relationships with volunteers and donors. Previous experience working in public facing roles providing high quality, customer/client minded experiences and service. Excellent communication skills, public speaking, and presentation experience with the ability to professionally advocate Best Friends' position on issues. Strong interpersonal skills,a teamplayer, personable, professional, and able toget alongwith people fromdifferent backgrounds, as well as the ability to handle sensitive and confidential situations. Resourceful, get-it-done,self-starterattitude; initiative toassistin any area or process; problem solving, seeking answers independently and enthusiastically; flexibility to persist until goals are achieved. Experience working for or with an animal rescue or shelter ispreferred, butnotrequired. Strong communicationskills. Bilingual or multi-lingual skillsare preferredbut notrequired. Customer-centric, non-judgmental approach to engaging with adopters, partners, visitors, volunteers, and colleagues; familiarity and comfort with a conversational adoption process. Prior experience working or volunteering hands on dogs and cats of various sizes, temperaments, and medical statuses; basic ability toidentifyand speak to medical and behavioral characteristics of dogs and cats. Abilityto work in a fast-paced environment withwell-developedorganization skillsto juggle multiple competing tasks and demands. Proficiencywith Microsoft Office products; familiarity with shelter software/animal management software, volunteer database,or desire to learn.
Physical Requirements:
Routinely lift 40 pounds and perform daily strenuous activity including, but not limited to lifting, carrying, reaching, stooping, squatting, cleaning, and bending. Perform repetitive tasks for extended periods of time including typing, sitting, walking, arm, and hand motion. Work indoors and outdoors in a variety of weather conditions including extreme heat and cold. Exposure to dogs, cats and other animals of all sizes, temperaments, and medical status.Ability to work with, leash, kennel, walk, and handle cats and dogs, including those with health and/or behavior conditions/concerns. Daily hours and days of the week may vary according to the needs of thedepartmentschedule; position includes weekends, nights, and holiday work. Ability to travel, including overnight stays, when needed.This role could include travel up to 5%, locally and out of state.
