What Your Job Will Be Like

Are you passionate about your work and dream of utilizing state-of-the-art facilities to explore solutions? Do you want to join a dynamic team that solves challenging issues for our nation's security? If so, you could be the Industrial Hygienist we are seeking to join our team.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Serve the role of Sandia National Laboratories Subject Matter Expert in the calibration, maintenance and use of Industrial Hygiene equipment, including gas detectors, noise monitors, personal sampling pumps and all Industrial Hygiene direct reading instruments.
  • Support all laboratory line organizations in the maintenance and repair of their remote mounted air monitoring equipment, including oxygen monitors and various gas detectors.
  • Provide technical support associated with the anticipation, identification, evaluation, and control of potential workplace hazards and risks.
  • Work in the field and in laboratories as necessary using area or personal breathing zone air monitoring methods, direct reading instrumentation, audio dosimetry equipment, sound level meters, instrument calibration techniques, and surface wipe sampling techniques to perform industrial hygiene monitoring, sampling, and dosimetry of workplace hazards and surface contamination.
  • Author and distribute industrial hygiene exposure assessment and sampling reports using the Industrial Hygiene Program electronic recordkeeping system or other approved documentation systems.
  • Perform ventilation hood surveys and maintains databases for respiratory protection, industrial hygiene surveys, local ventilation hood inspections, instrument calibration, and hearing conservation

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.

Salary Range

$87,400 - $199,700

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require

  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Health, Occupational Health, Industrial Hygiene, Biology, Chemistry or a closely related field plus (5) or more years of relevant occupational safety and health work experience; Or equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.
  • Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) by the American Board of Industrial Hygiene
  • Experienced with the following:
    • Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations (29CFR1910 and 29CFR1926) and Department of Energy safety and health regulations (10CFR850 and 10CFR851).
    • Industrial Hygiene monitoring equipment.
    • Occupational/environmental health related monitoring and interpreting results.
    • Maximo software to inventory gas and oxygen detectors and maintain calibration/oxygen sensor replacement history.
  • Active DOE Q-level security clearance or equivalent (e.g., DOD Top Secret).
Qualifications We Desire

  • Master's degree in Environmental Health, Occupational Health, Industrial Hygiene or a closely related field plus (1) or more years relevant experience; or doctorate in relevant occupational safety and health discipline.
  • Experience with the following:
    • Working independently on assignments and exercising decision-making authority.
    • Providing authoritative consultation and advice based on experience and technical knowledge.
    • Microsoft Office Suite computer applications.
  • Partner with organizations and workforce to assure safe operations. Responsible for Pressure Safety, Electrical Safety, Biological Safety, Laser Safety, NANO Material Safety, and Beryllium Program.
  • Credentialed by BCSP as a Certified Safety Professional (CSP). Ability to work effectively with others in a teaming environment under minimal supervision.
  • Excellent customer relationships and workplace interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills.

Security Clearance

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q security clearance to start, or equivalent active security clearance with another U.S. government agency (e.g., DOD). Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.

NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs

If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.

If you have a MedPED and you are selected for an on-site interview at Sandia National Laboratories, there may be additional steps necessary to ensure compliance with NNSA security requirements prior to the interview date.

Essential Functions

If offered the position, you may be required to demonstrate your fitness to perform certain physical aspects of the position, including lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling.

Position Information

This Limited Term Employee (LTE) position is a temporary position for one year term, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to a maximum of seven years.

Individuals in LTE positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance.
