LABORATORY TECHNICIAN

Chicago Department of Public Health

Number of Positions: 1

(Additional vacancies possible pending budget approval)

Starting Annual Salary: $57,000.00

New hires are paid the starting rate. Current employees' pay rate is determined by their job title and years of service

This position is open to the public and all current City employees covered under the City's collective bargaining agreement with AMERICAN FEDERATION OF STATE, COUNTY, AND MUNICIPAL EMPLOYEES (AFSCME) - BARGAINING UNIT 1, 3, 4 & 5. Only employees in City job titles in this bargaining unit are eligible to bid.

Mission: CDPH works with communities and partners to create an equitable, safe, resilient and Healthy Chicago.

Under supervision, exercises independent judgment in the conduct of various medical tests requiring minimal analysis; may also perform general lab testing, maintenance, and related duties as required

Essential Duties:

* Performs a wide variety of complex tests (e.g., hematology, chemistry, bacteriology, virology, parasitology, and serology)

* Prepares specimen for laboratory investigations, microscopic study, and testing

* Prepares media for microbiological analysis

* Prepares chemical reagents, stains, and solutions

* Performs venipuncture and fingerstick tests and processes specimen for analysis

* Conducts analysis of test results and completes reports of same

* Performs more complex laboratory techniques including extraction, digestion, and floatation

* Performs various screening tests including blood lead screening

* Performs and maintains records of quality control testing to ensure that laboratories are operating within prescribed guidelines

* Safely handles and disposes of hazardous materials, waste, and specimen

* Operates assigned lab instruments (e.g., lab washer, pH and conductivity meters, balance calibration, temperature measuring and monitoring devices, etc.)

* Cleans and maintains laboratory glassware, benches, and various lab equipment

* Retrieves, tracks, and stocks specified laboratory inventory

* Prepares periodic reports

Additional duties may be required for this position.

Hours: 8:00am - 4:00pm | Mon, Wed, Fri

9:00am - 5:00pm | Tue & Thu

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Education, Training, and Experience:

Two (2) years of work experience conducting medical, or chemical and microbiological tests in an environmental, water quality, or medical/health science laboratory, OR

* Graduation from an accredited college or university with an associate's degree or higher in the biological, environmental, health sciences, or physical/life (e.g., chemistry, biology) sciences, plus one (1) year of work experience conducting medical, or chemical and microbiological tests in an environmental, water quality, or medical/health science laboratory

Licensure, Certification, or Other Qualifications:

Some positions may require incumbents to be licensed and certified by the State of Illinois as Breath Analysis Operators

Selection Requirements:

This position requires applicants to complete an interview. The interviewed candidate(s) possessing the qualifications best suited to fulfill the responsibilities of the position, based on the oral and written parts of the interview will be selected.

Preference will be given to candidates possessing the following:

* Previous experience with STAT testing

* Previous experience with gram stain

* Previous experience with manual syphilis serology test
