POSITION DESCRIPTION

Position Title: High School InternshipFLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Reports To: Clerk of Circuit Court

Position Summary:

This position is to assist the Clerk of Courts Office with clerical and non-clerical duties while learning about the legal system and gaining experience in general work skills.

Duties/Responsibilities:

The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

*Greet customers, assess the purpose of the visit, direct to appropriate department, date stamp documents for filing, deputize documents, assist litigants with public access computer, and provide general court assistance as required.

*Scan and copy files and data into computer system.

*Receives, processes and files a variety of court related and other legal documents; dispenses information to the general public, other County Departments and attorneys in response to telephone inquiries or personal visits.

*Assist other clerks on special projects to include data entry and use of Excel spreadsheets.

*Prepares letters or documents of general, technical, and confidential nature.

*Assist with destroying old files as directed.

*Performs minor bookkeeping duties.

*Provides general court assistance as required.

*Performs other duties as assigned, including responding to an emergency event.

Work Direction Received:

Works under the routine supervision of the Clerk of Court.

Supervision Exercised:

None.

Interaction:

There is significant interaction with attorneys, law enforcement agencies, state, county, and local agencies, other County employees, judges and the general public.

Essential Knowledge and Abilities:

Ability to understand and effectively carry out oral and written instructions, draft accurate documents and reports, communicate effectively orally and in writing, and interact effectively with co workers and the general public. Ability to fulfill physical demands of job, sensory demands (seeing and hearing), and cognitive demands (concentration, conceptualization, memorization).

Training and Experience:

High school junior or senior. Must be 18 years of age by start date. Proven experience in ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers and to multiply and divide. Knowledge and experience in Microsoft Word and Excel. Ability to keyboard at 50 words per minute.
