Position Summary
The American Museum of Natural History is one of the world's preeminent scientific and cultural institutions, and has as its mission to discover, interpret, and disseminate information about human cultures, the natural world, and the universe through a wide-ranging program of scientific research, education, and exhibition.

The Exhibition department is seeking a full-time Director of Project Management to lead the planning, coordination, and execution of all exhibition projects, both permanent and temporary. The Director leads scope definition, budget and schedule development, and overall team collaboration. The Director is responsible for designing and implementing project plans, working closely within the department and with other teams both within and outside the Museum to ensure successful project delivery.

Job duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Direct the planning of the various overlapping projects that are part of the Exhibition program, ensuring that projects open on time and on budget.
  • Lead the overall coordination of project development, working with both internal and external partners as needed to keep the projects moving forward.
  • Set up and manage meetings, engaging with all relevant stakeholders to contribute meaningfully to the completion of the various projects.
  • Manage project budget tracking, budget analysis, and change in scope requests while constantly monitoring project milestones.


The expected salary range for the Director of Project Management is $115,000/annual - $120,000/annual. The AMNH offers an extensive benefits package designed to meet the needs of our dedicated and diverse community.

Pay will be determined based on several factors. The hiring range for the position at commencement is based on the type of work and the scope of responsibilities. The salary and placement offered is based on a number of individualized factors, including, but not limited to, skills, knowledge, training, education, credentials, areas of specialization, and depth and scope of experience.
Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in communications, nonprofit management, museum studies, or another related field.
  • 10 years of professional experience, including five years in project management.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities and deadlines.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Project management certification (e.g., PMP, CAPM).
  • Project management experience working in a cultural institution.

Physical Demands

  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position (sitting or standing) for prolonged periods.
  • Must be able to move about the Museum campus.
