Position Description Summary:
The School's Counseling and Human Development Department seeks a Clinical Assistant Professor of Counseling and Human Development, Non-Tenure Accruing Faculty, and Director of the Alexandria Community Counseling Service Center ( CCSC- AGEC) for teaching and administrative responsibilities aligned with departmental needs and advancing the department's goal of training anti-racist, multiculturally and social justice-oriented counselors for the counseling profession.
This position will start as early as Summer 2026.
The George Washington University is located just four blocks from the White House and situated close to the nation's educational decision makers and associations. Envisioned by our first President and created by an Act of Congress in 1821, GW is now the largest institution of higher education in the nation's capital. George Washington University's Graduate School of Education and Human Development ( GSEHD) offers a number of graduate programs at the master's, educational specialist, and doctoral levels that prepare students for a variety of leadership roles in diverse education settings in both the public and private sector.
The Department of Counseling and Human Development houses three master's degree programs, several certificate programs, and a PhD in Counseling. The Rehabilitation Counseling program is ranked sixth in the US, according to US News and World Report. The department has partnerships with many field sites in the metropolitan DC area where its students can complete practicum and internship experiences.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
The Clinical Assistant Professor and Clinic Director will provide comprehensive oversight for a clinical mental health counseling clinic that serves children, adolescents, and adults in the local community. This clinic also functions as a training site for student counseling interns. The Director is responsible for ensuring the delivery of ethical, developmentally appropriate, and clinically sound services in alignment with professional standards and institutional policies and the clinical training of Masters Counseling students. Must be physically present or ensure a member of the faculty/staff is present during all clinical sessions.

Specific duties and responsibilities include:

Administrative Service (70%):

Clinical Oversight
* Ensure the clinic operates ethically and in compliance with professional standards, institutional policies, and applicable laws.
* Provide direct oversight to student counseling interns during all clinic hours (M-F 11am-7pm).
* Conduct client intake and screening to determine eligibility for clinic services.
* Oversee client scheduling and ensure timely, accurate, and compliant documentation of clinical records.
* Market the clinic to increase client engagement.
-Examine funding opportunities for the clinic to increase presence and provision of services for community members.
* Monitor client care and ensure appropriate case assignments.
* Provide clinical supervision to up to six interns each semester, requiring six hours per week of direct individual or group supervision.
* Offer corrective feedback and support intern skill development in providing effective and ethical clinical care.
* Engage in crisis management as needed.
* Collaborate with supervisors, faculty, the Director of School Counseling.
* Engage in the Clinical Training Committee activities.
* Provide supports for students in need of additional professional growth.
Administrative and Financial Oversight
* Manage clinic administrative processes, including overseeing client intake, session scheduling, and financial transactions.
* Ensure that client payments are collected, processed accurately, and deposited into departmental accounts in accordance with university procedures.
* Maintain up-to-date knowledge of accreditation and compliance requirements, ensuring clinic meets all legal and ethical standards.
* Provide leadership to both clinic staff and student interns, promoting a collaborative, supportive, and professional clinic environment.
* Create and implement clinic orientations
* Integrate clinical, administrative, and supervisory responsibilities to ensure the clinic's smooth operation.
* Foster a learning environment for counseling interns, supporting their growth in both theoretical and applied aspects of clinical practice.
Teaching (30%):
Teach one to three graduate level clinical counseling courses (e.g. Interview skills, theories of counseling, marriage and family counseling) dependent upon supervisory needs within the clinic.
Minimum Qualifications:

  • Doctorate from a Counselor Education Program (CACREP accredited).
  • Licensed or licensed eligible as a professional counselor in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  • At least 5 years of clinical experience in mental health counseling.
  • Experience in providing clinical supervision and training to interns or students.
  • Experience providing clinical services and supervising clinicians engaging in play therapy

Advertised Salary: 76,000 - 82,500
