Overview:

We are seeking a Cold Source Staff Member who will focus on operation of the cold source facility.This positionresidesin the Cold Source Operations Group within theHigh Flux Isotope Reactor(HFIR) Operations Section,Research Reactors Division,Neutron Sciences DirectorateatOak Ridge National Laboratory(ORNL).

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Operations:

    • Operate Cold Source cryogenic and support systems to support HFIR operations and neutron science missions

    • Conducts shift operationsin accordance withplant procedures, HFIR Technical Safety Requirements, and Cold Source Safety Authorization Basis

    • Serves as the single point of contact for authorizing, directing, andmonitoringCold Source activities

    • Performs actions necessary to mitigate the consequences of Cold Source transients

    • Works 12-hour rotating shift work during operating cycles

    • Safely perform hydrogen addition and venting operations and take proper actionsin the event ofan incident

    • Serves as Qualified Person for Lockout/Tagout(Lock/Tag/Verify) process per ADM-0200 to hang and clear equipment lockouts

  • Work Control:

    • Authorizes start of work affecting Cold Source equipment and systems

    • Authorizes the removal of equipment to service following maintenance,testingor operational actives

    • Authorizes the return of equipment to service following maintenance,testingor operational actives

    • Acts as Issuing Authority in the Lockout/Tagout (Lock/Tag/Verify) process per ADM-0200 whendesignatedby the CSOL

  • Administrative:

    • Write Technical Safety Requirement Tacking documents for approval

    • Ensures plant operational deficiencies areidentifiedand corrective action is initiated

    • Reviews Cold Source plantoperatingand emergency response procedures

    • Provides feedback tooperating, emergency, and administrative procedures

    • Perform quarterly/annual audits for various operations procedures/programs

    • Order operational supplies and equipment

  • Maintenance Support:

    • AcquiresandmaintainsTask Leader qualification, including writing maintenance work packages

    • Review and approve Maintenance Work Packages

    • Produce and review Lockout/Tagout per ADM-0200

    • Establish system conditions for maintenance and testing

    • Perform system andcomponenttesting tovalidatemaintenance actions

    • Perform orassistin troubleshooting of systems/components

  • Safety:

    • Serves as Emergency Response Team member during evacuations

    • Maintains control of hydrogen control areas and personnel access for Cold Source Areas per ADM-0604

    • Exercises "Stop Work" authority within the Cold Source facility for practices that could jeopardize safety

    • Ensures compliance with environmental, safety, health, and quality program directives

    • Ensures Cold Source activities are conductedin accordance withappropriate tagging, safety, configuration controlpracticesand Conduct of Operations per ADM-0001

    • Ensures applicable environmental, safety, and health directives arecomplied withfor all Cold Source operation activities.

    • Handle cryogenic and explosive fluids per safety requirements and provide guidance as necessary

  • Professionalism:

    • Maintains a strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of professional values and ethics

Basic Qualifications:

  • An ASdegree in an engineering or science discipline and a minimum of 7 years of relevant experience. A high school diploma may be considered with a minimum of 9 years of relevant experience.

  • At least 2 years of experience in nuclear plant operations.

  • Familiarity with DOE Order 422.1, Conduct of Operations.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Current orpreviouscertification as a Nuclear Reactor Controller at the HFIR.

  • Ability to interpret complex mechanical, electrical, and electronic system drawings.

  • Experience with vacuum systems, cryogenic systems, and hydrogen systems.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

  • Motivatedself-starter with the ability to work independently and as a part of the team.

Special Requirements:

  • Physical Requirements:Work involves various physical requirements and working conditions. As such, a pre-hire physical will berequiredafter offer.

  • This position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.

  • Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
