Primary Purpose of Position
Employee is to function as a Mason but also using other trades when needed. This position is responsible for the maintenance of the hardscapes, repairing catch basins, installing other walkable surfaces, and grading. This work is performed on campus, as well as satellite locations, during the full calendar year.
Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from high school or equivalent. Experience in the trade(s) areas related to the position's role may be substituted on a year-for-year basis. Degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions. Essential Job Functions
This positions main charge is to maintain existing structures on Appalachian State University campus as well as the satellite locations. From time to time this position does get involved in relatively small scale new construction projects. Duties include but are not limited to:

  • preparing to pour concrete by forming, walls, sidewalks, catch basins, steps, curb and guttering.
  • repairing catch basins and storm drains, repairing them using pvc pipe, pre cast forms, and road tiles
  • repair rock walls, installs footers, erects rock walls, constructs pre cast block walls, and installs brick and stone pavers, Flexi-Pave, and Versa-Loc
  • Small street repair is also part of this position to include repairing potholes and small scale paving projects
  • Snow removal by all means possible is also a responsibility of this position


This position requires the employee to use multiple trades daily to preform daily task; such as, (carpentry, machine operation, landscaping, and grading). Also performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Required for this Position

  • Must have excellent verbal and written skills, able to read blue prints, operate large equipment such as: excavators, dump trucks, bucket trucks, and skid-steers.
  • Be proficient in the carpentry trade since all concrete forms are fabricated by ASU Masons.
  • Knowledge of the use of the internet, email, and Microsoft software are required.
  • Must be able to work in awkward positions for extended periods; able to bend, stoop, climb, lift 50+ pounds repetitively, in essence be relatively physically fit.
  • This position also works in changing climatic situations; therefore, this employee must be able to adapt to changing weather.
  • Ability to operate university owned vehicles with
    a valid driver's license.

Preferred Qualifications
Employee to have the ability to read blueprints, a transit, and extensive knowledge in all aspects of masonry to include but not limited to: Versa-Loc, brick pavers, Flexi-Pave, stone masonry, block, brick walls, and pouring concrete. An Appalachian mason must have a thorough knowledge of mixing masonry bonding agents, a proficiency in running heavy equipment. An Appalachian mason must also be proficient in carpentry fabrications. Have a concrete base in the ability to use personal computers including: the internet, email, Microsoft Software and Adobe. ICPI Concrete Paver Certificate and the Versa-Loc Installers Certificate preferred.
Required Functional Competencies to Successfully Perform Job Duties.
Knowledge-Technical: Routinely and consistently performs widely varying and broad, functionally diverse facility maintenance assignments requiring in-depth analysis and problem solving regarding the most complex, non-routine building systems, using advanced skills related to the assigned trade area. Serves as a technical expert within the work unit. Guides, directs and coaches others regarding the application and interpretation of technical issues. Applies and interprets technical knowledge to resolve unique or highly complex situations. Analyzes and researches appropriate solutions. Has a thorough and extensive understanding of programs, concepts and practices in the most complex building systems trades area as well as a general understanding of one or more different trades areas.

Attention to Detail: Checks and re-checks work of others, considering accuracy with respect to standards and codes. Considers options and details that are not obvious. Troubleshoot total systems. Integrates highest quality control standards into work.

Problem Solving: Identifies facilities-related maintenance problems that require in-depth analysis, and identifies options for solving those problems. Solve unusual facility maintenance problems that require the application of journey level trades knowledge and determine the most effective and efficient course of action. Gathers and analyzes/interprets information to better understand the nature of the problem. May seek input from subordinates, peers, and/or managers in the decision-making process in order to solve the problem. Evaluates options and chooses appropriate action by considering potential outcomes. Makes sure that problem is appropriately addressed.

Coordination-Work: Determines project/assignments by breaking them down into tasks. Sets objectives and prioritizes activities and tasks, adjusting priorities when appropriate. Takes advantage of available resources (personnel, processes, departments, and tools) to complete work efficiently. Anticipates obstacles/roadblocks and prepares alternative plans to ensure timely task accomplishment. Uses time effectively and does not let distractions interfere with the completion of the job/project.

6:00 A.M. - 3:00 P.M. Monday through Fridaywith the possibility of schedule changes based on departmental need. This position is subject to call back at any time: day, night, weekends, and holidays due to weather events or other emergencies.

This position is considered MANDATORY and is expected to work during University closures, emergencies and adverse weather conditions.
