Say hello to opportunities. It's not every day that you consider starting a new career. We're RingCentral, and we're happy that someone as talented as you is considering this role. First, a little about us, we're a $2 Billion annual revenue company with double digit Annual Recurring Revenue (ARR) and a $93 Billion market opportunity in UCaaS, Contact Center and AI-powered adjacencies. We invest more than $250 million annually to ensure our AI-enabled technology and platforms meet or exceed the needs of our customers. RingSense AI is our proprietary AI solution. It's designed to fit the business needs of our customers, orchestrated to be accurate and precise, and built on the same open platform principles we apply to our core software solutions. This is where you and your skills come in. We're currently looking for a Staff Engineer with broad and deep software engineering experience, specializing in modernization of legacy application stacks into scalable, modular, cloud-native architectures. This role focuses on transforming monolithic systems (e.g., traditional .NET backend + tightly coupled frontend) into well-structured microservices ecosystems. A defining characteristic of this role is mastery of Spec-Driven Development (SDD)-using clear, versioned, testable specifications to align engineering execution with business requirements, reduce ambiguity, and enable predictable, scalable delivery. This individual operates at both architectural and implementation levels: defining modernization strategy, decomposing systems, guiding teams through transformation, and contributing directly to critical components. Job Duties:
1. Architecture Modernization & System Decomposition
Lead migration from legacy monolithic architectures to distributed microservices. Define domain boundaries using DDD principles. Establish API-first design and contract-driven service communication. Drive decoupling of backend and frontend systems. Lead database modernization strategies (schema refactoring, service-level data ownership, performance tuning).
Example: Break apart a legacy .NET monolith backed by Microsoft SQL Server into independently deployable services for identity, billing, CRM integration, catalog, and reporting-while maintaining operational continuity and minimizing business disruption.
2. Spec-Driven Development Leadership (Core Competency)
Establish and champion Spec-Driven Development across teams. Create executable specifications that define APIs, workflows, data contracts, and system behaviors before implementation begins. Use specifications as the single source of truth for engineering, QA, product, and DevOps. Drive alignment between technical design, acceptance criteria, and deployment pipelines. Ensure traceability from business requirements to production code.
Example: Before decomposing a monolithic order workflow, produce a formal service contract specification defining event flows, payload schemas, error states, and SLAs-enabling parallel team execution without integration chaos.
3. AI-Based Application Transformation (Non-LLM Focus)
Identify opportunities to incorporate AI-driven automation, predictive systems, and intelligent decision engines into modernized architectures. Integrate AI capabilities into modular services without tightly coupling them to core infrastructure. Design systems that allow AI components to evolve independently from transactional systems.
4. Hands-On Engineering Across the Stack
Contribute to backend, frontend, and integration layers. Review and understand codebases across multiple languages and frameworks. Provide architectural guidance for refactoring legacy code.
Technical breadth includes: Backend
Frontend
React Angular VueJS TypeScript / JavaScript Modern SPA architectures
Databases
Microsoft SQL Server Oracle Postgres MySQL MongoDB Elasticsearch
Mobile
5. CRM & Enterprise System Integration
Architect integrations with CRM systems and enterprise platforms. Design secure API integrations and identity flows. Ensure reliable data synchronization between transactional systems and CRM platforms. Modernize legacy CRM-adjacent workflows into scalable service-based designs.
6. Cloud & DevOps Transformation
Lead migration to cloud-native infrastructure (GCP, AWS). Architect Kubernetes-based containerized environments. Implement CI/CD pipelines aligned with Spec-Driven Development. Introduce Infrastructure as Code (Terraform or equivalent). Improve deployment velocity from manual release cycles to automated pipelines. Strengthen security via IAM, SSO, and service-level access control.
7. Distributed Systems & Scalability
Design highly available systems with observability, monitoring, and alerting. Improve performance and scalability under high transaction loads. Architect messaging and streaming solutions (e.g., Kafka-style event systems). Ensure system resiliency during phased migration from monolith to microservices.
Desired Qualifications:
15+ years of software engineering experience. Demonstrated success modernizing large-scale monolithic applications. Proven leadership in microservices and distributed systems architecture. Strong understanding of database enabled applications. Deep experience implementing Spec-Driven Development methodologies. Broad code fluency across React, Ruby, .NET, Java, Go, and modern web stacks. Experience supporting mobile application ecosystems. Experience integrating CRM and enterprise systems. Strong foundation in algorithms, system design, and scalable architecture. Track record of mentoring engineers and influencing architectural direction across teams.
This Staff Engineer will:
Transform legacy systems into scalable, modular architectures. Introduce engineering rigor through Spec-Driven Development. Enable predictable delivery and cross-team alignment. Increase system performance, scalability, and reliability. Strengthen enterprise integration and CRM workflows. Elevate technical standards across backend, frontend, mobile, and cloud environments.
