GENERAL SUMMARY: Provides daily management and oversight of activities within the Anatomic Pathology (AP) laboratory, including specimen accessioning, labeling, tracking, and handling (e.g., grossing support, initial fixation, cytology processing). Ensures the efficient and accurate flow of specimens, leads technical and non-technical staff, and maintains strict adherence to all quality assurance and regulatory standards. PRINCIPAL JOB FUNCTIONS: 1. *Commits to the mission, vision, beliefs and consistently demonstrates our core values. 2. *Oversees daily operations and monitors specimen workflow to ensure established turnaround times are met. 3. *Troubleshoots complex issues related to specimen identification, missing information, data entry, and processing discrepancies. 4. *Collaborates with other departments to resolve issues and streamline processes. 5. *Monitors and enforces compliance with all relevant regulatory requirements concerning safety and is responsible for fostering a positive safety culture and managing incident investigations to ensure a safe working environment. 6. *Develops, updates and maintains a procedure manual for the department and ensures it is current and compliant with the College of American Pathologists (CAP) guidelines, as well as any other associated governing body. 7. Ensures all activities are performed and documented according to established standard operating procedures (SOPs). 8. Prepares for and participates in internal and external audits and inspections by regulatory bodies such as CAP, Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA), and others. 9. *Responsible for personnel activities including interviewing, hiring, onboarding, training and competency assessments. 10. Provides coaching, mentorship, and performance feedback, conducting timely performance reviews and disciplinary actions when necessary. 11. *Ensures that staff are properly trained and maintains competency in all relevant procedures. 12. *Plans, assigns, and schedules department staff to ensure efficient workflow and to meet turnaround time goals. 13. *Manages supply inventory and oversees maintenance and troubleshooting of laboratory equipment. 14. *Prepares and processes specimens and performs laboratory procedures according to established SOPs, (e.g., grossing support, non-gynecologic and gynecologic cytology processing, molecular testing). 15. Proactively resolves specimen-related inquiries, ensuring timely and professional communication with clinical teams, physicians, pathologists and clients. 16. *Ensures accurate data entry and record-keeping within the Laboratory Information System (LIS). EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Bachelor of science degree in a laboratory science or related field required and at least three (3) years of recent experience in a medical laboratory required. Minimum of one (1) year leadership experience is preferred. | |
