GENERAL PURPOSE: The City of Winter Park Electric Utility is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented part-time Summer Engineering Intern to assist engineering staff with distribution engineering activities related to the planning, design, and operation of the electric utility system. The selected candidate will support the design of distribution electric system infrastructure required to serve new and existing customers. Responsibilities include assisting in the application of engineering standards and equipment specifications, customer loading configuration, permit review, developing and updating circuit GIS mapping and technical drawings, and supporting the design of street and area lighting systems. Additional exposure to Bulk Power purchasing markets and integrated sustainability initiatives. This position provides hands-on experience in electric utility operations and offers valuable exposure to utility engineering and municipal business practices.

Support other Electric Department Management Team members to implement and maintain an accident-free work culture. Provide electric distribution system planning, design, operations, maintenance and construction support to the Engineering Manager, field personnel and construction contractors(s). Plan and design the City's electric utility in accordance with applicable laws, rules, regulations and standards. Prepare maps or AutoCAD drawings to accompany permit applications. Ensure projects completed are according to permit specifications through onsite construction meetings. Assist in securing easements for electric utility equipment placement. Participate in power system studies such as fault studies, load flow studies, and coordination studies. Prepare circuit maps and drawings. Review and approve building permits for the department. Prepare technical reports as required and other work as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Ability to collect, organize and analyze information, perform research and operate a personal computer. (Microsoft Office-Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook)
Ability to express ideas clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
Demonstrates knowledge of the principles, methods, and practices of electrical systems, supported by strong theoretical understanding and effective problem-solving abilities.

Typical Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: The candidate must be currently enrolled in a bachelor's or master's degree program in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Business Administration, or a closely related field.
CERTIFICATIONS, TRAINING, SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Possess and maintain a valid State of Florida Driver's License, Class E or higher.
Note:All certifications or degrees being pursued must be active at the time of application and must remain in good standing as a condition of continued employment.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Physical Tasks involve speaking, hearing, standing, walking, sitting, inspection, reading, editing and writing with computer. Environmental Tasks are regularly performed without exposure to adverse environmental conditions. Sensory Tasks require sound, visual perception and discrimination and oral and written communication ability.
