The Laboratory for HIV and COVID-19 Vaccine Research and Development is seeking a detail-oriented scientist to fulfill a key role as Research Technician III. This role involves conducting laboratory experiments to measure neutralizing antibody responses in cell lines to support HIV and COVID-19 vaccine development. Responsibilities include analyzing data using quality control criteria, accurately reporting results, and strictly following Good Clinical Laboratory Practices (GCLP). The position also supports overall lab operations by maintaining equipment and cleanliness, preparing reagents and supplies, assisting with general lab tasks, and reviewing and adhering to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

Minimum Requirements:



  • Work generally requires skills acquired through the completion of a bachelor's degree in botany, biology, zoology, psychology or other science related scientific field program.
  • Work requires two years of research experience. A related master's degree may offset required years of experience on a 1:1 basis, e.g., a two year master's degree in lieu of two years of experience.
  • OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE


Preferred Qualifications:



  • Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry, genetics, microbiology or other related scientific fields.
  • Two years of research experience involving mouse work.
  • Detail-oriented, very well organized, and approach laboratory procedures with critical thinking.
  • Strong initiative and eagerness to learn.
  • Outstanding problem-solving skills.
  • Must adhere to strict safety requirements.
  • Ability to work and communicate effectively in a dynamic group environment.

This position is onsite. The work is performed on-site or at a designated assignment location.

The candidate will work closely with lab members including postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, research technicians, and is expected to independently perform daily activities which include, but may not be limited to:



  • Assessment of neutralizing antibody responses in various cell lines in support of pre-clinical and clinical HIV and COVID-19 vaccine development.


  • Data analysis with adherence to quality control pass/fail criteria. Report results in an accurate and timely manner to Laboratory Directors and Program staff.
  • Performance of all experiments with complete adherence to Good Clinical Laboratory Practices (GCLP) guidelines.
  • Contribute to the daily laboratory effort to adhere to GCLP guidelines, including but not limited to temperature checks, preventative maintenance, SOP adherence, corrective actions, trainings and use of good documentation practices through each process.
  • Provide equipment preventative maintenance and ensure laboratory room cleanliness, e.g., cleaning of incubator trays and water pans, surface decontamination, freezer maintenance to avoid ice accumulation, floor cleaning, and autoclaving.
  • Provide support and collaborate on general laboratory needs, e.g., preparation of common reagents, stocking laboratories with needed supplies and reagents, and freezer transfers.
  • Read and train on all required SOPs, provide timely and critical review of SOPs as requested, adhere to all assigned SOPs.

Anticipated Pay Range:

Duke University provides an annual base salary range for this position as USD $46,350 to USD $70,253. Duke University considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position; candidate's work experience, education/training, and key skills; internal peer equity; as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
