Department Summary

UCLA Film & Television Archive, a department of the UCLA Library, collects moving images as works of art and as social and historical documents, restores and preserves moving images for current and future generations, curates collections, programs, and events using moving images to advance knowledge, and provides access to moving images for purposes of research, education, and enjoyment. The Archive's collections consist of over 500,000 holdings dating from the dawn of cinema to the present and cover a broad spectrum of content from major Hollywood studios films and network television shows to independent productions and news footage. The Public Programs unit of the Film & Television Archive conceptualizes live and virtual cinema programs for both in-theater exhibition and virtual screening platforms in a year-round capacity. Public Programs coordinates an ongoing calendar of screening events of contemporary, historical, and archival films curated from various sources, including the Archive's various collections as well as local & international studio & independent film archives and contemporary international distributors. Public Programs is responsible for programs from ideation through research to execution and works closely with the Motion Picture and Television Offices, Research, and Study Center, and Library Communications and Marketing to fulfill the Archive's mission to advocate for the accessibility of all moving images in all formats.
Position Summary

Under the direction of the Senior Public Programmer, the Part-time Projectionist operates the Billy Wilder Theater projection booth, as assigned, in support of film and media screenings for the Public Programs unit of the Film & Television Archive. Standard duties include projection equipment operation, additional help, and following safety guidelines.

Actual salary offers consider factors, including budget, prior experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business considerations. Qualifications

  • Experience projecting 35mm film with a changeover system. (Required) And
  • Experience with projecting 16mm film (Required) And
  • Experience troubleshooting and testing projection equipment. (Required) And
  • Experience with working as part of a team; collaborating with colleagues. Ability to establish rapport and maintain cooperative working relationships. (Required) And
  • Experience with DCP creation, file testing, and digital projection. (Required) And
  • Experience training projectionists in projection and safety requirements. (Required) And
  • Experience with current standards for virtual film events, including technical specs & standards for software/tech & event participation by intra/interdepartmental parties & third parties/guests. (Preferred) And
  • Experience with projecting 70mm film. (Preferred) And
  • Experience with the fields of film and television production and archival preservation. (Preferred) And
  • Experience with film traffic procedures. (Preferred)
  • Skill in setting priorities that reflect relative importance of job responsibilities. (Required)
  • Skill to perform repetitive tasks according to set procedures, sequence, & pace. (Required)
  • Skill to prioritize assignments to finish work in a timely manner according to: changes in workload; changes in assignments; frequent interruptions or distractions; competing requirements. (Required)
  • Skill to work independently & follow thru on tasks with minimal or no direction. (Required)
  • Ability to accept equivocal circumstances and take action where answers to a projection problem are not readily apparent. (Required)
  • Working knowledge of film and television archival preservation. (Required)
  • Working knowledge: engineering concepts; symbols, terminology, and methods. (Required)
  • Detailed knowledge of prof. projection practices relative to problems, situations, practices or procedures in order to:define problems or objectives;identify relevant concerns/factors;formulate logical & objective conclusions; recognize alternatives & their implications; analyze complex tech data. (Required)
  • Skill in recognizing an emergency and taking appropriate action. (Required)
  • Skill in writing concise, logical, grammatically correct analytical reports to explain the inner workings and needs of the projection booth and theater. (Required)
  • Detailed knowledge of film traffic procedures. (Required)
  • Ability to initiate and maintain cooperative working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, and managers. Ability to work harmoniously and as a team player, thrive in a team-based environment, and skill in fostering teamwork among others. (Required)
