Aerospace Specialty Chemical - Facilities Engineer

As the Aerospace Specialty Chemical Manufacturing - Facilities Engineer you will support our specialty chemical manufacturing facility in Shelby, NC. This is a key technical and leadership role responsible for supporting the plant throughout its life cycle-from construction and commissioning, through start-up and ramp-up, to ongoing operations. This position acts as the owner's representative during construction, leads vertical start-up activities, and manages capital expenditure (CAPEX) and small EHS, Maintenance and Productivity projects during steady-state operations. The role requires strong engineering expertise, project management capabilities, and effective coordination with multiple stakeholders to ensure the plant's successful delivery, safe start-up, and reliable operation.

You will work on-site at our Shelby, NC facility and during the Construction and Start-up phase you will report to the Project Engineering Manager. Post Start-up you will report to the Site Engineering Leader.

Responsibilities:

  • Serve as PPG's representative during construction, reviewing plans, conducting inspections, coordinating with contractors, and ensuring compliance with design, safety, and regulatory standards.
  • Review and approve construction documentation, manage field project change notices, evaluate cost/time impacts of changes, and track budget against authorized modifications.
  • Provide regular status updates, monitor schedules for delays or constraints, manage punch lists for substantial completion, and recommend corrective actions to stakeholders.
  • Develop and execute vertical start-up plans, lead cross-functional teams, oversee system checks and safety reviews, and monitor plant performance during commissioning phases.
  • Coordinate troubleshooting activities, manage start-up documentation, facilitate training and knowledge transfer to operations personnel, and support the transition to steady-state operations.
  • Identify and prioritize capital projects, develop project scopes and budgets, manage execution including procurement and contractor oversight, and conduct risk assessments with mitigation plans.
  • Ensure adherence to company standards and safety regulations, coordinate project integration with ongoing operations, prepare project evaluations, and support plant reliability and continuous improvement initiatives.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree with a major in an Engineering specialty or a related discipline highly preferred.
  • Five (5) or more years of proven experience in industrial facility construction, commissioning, start-up, and operations required.
  • Strong knowledge of chemical process engineering, plant equipment, and safety standards preferred.
  • Demonstrated project management experience, including CAPEX project execution required.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams.
  • Previous experience with project management and engineering software tools required.
  • Commitment to safety, environmental stewardship, and regulatory compliance.
