Brown and Caldwell (BC) is seeking a dedicated Health and Safety (H&S) Professional to join our West Business Unit (WBU) H&S team. In this role, you will report directly to the WBU Director of Health and Safety and collaborate closely with both the Director and other team members. Your primary responsibilities will include delivering outstanding internal client support and effectively managing subcontractor relationships. The ideal candidate is an articulate communicator-both verbally and in writing-who is highly organized, proactive, and able to thrive within a diverse team while managing multiple priorities in a dynamic environment. This position requires a proactive, collaborative approach and the ability to adapt to changing priorities. The successful candidate will be instrumental in fostering a positive safety culture and drive ongoing improvements in EHS performance across the business unit. Remote work within the United States is allowed; Central/Mountain/Pacific time zones preferred. Detailed Description: The successful candidate will play a key role in supporting the Director of Health and Safety in managing and enhancing the environmental, health, and safety (EHS) program for the West Business Unit (WBU). This includes overseeing the safety performance of subcontractor partners and ensuring all activities comply with BCs H&S standards as well as applicable regulatory requirements.
- Project Leadership: Work closely with the WBU Director, Health and Safety to support Construction Managers, Project Managers, and applicable staff across all project phases by identifying EHS risks, recommending improvements, and implementing solutions, while also serving as the H&S lead on lowrisk, programmatic projects on behalf of the Director, Health and Safety.
- Subcontractor Oversight: Monitor and evaluate subcontractor safety practices to ensure alignment with project and company standards. Conduct H&S prequalification of subcontractors using internal and external management systems.
- Client Support: Assist client service teams in understanding and meeting client-specific H&S expectations. Maintain BC contractor prequalification status in vendor systems such as Avetta, ISNetworld, and BROWZ for assigned clients.
- Program Facilitation: Support development and review of H&S plans for medium to high-risk projects. Conduct in-field project kickoffs and audits as needed, and potentially provide full-time, on-site H&S management for extended periods.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Facilitate meetings with WBU Leadership Team members and participate in select Communities of Practice (CoPs) and workgroups as an active member of the H&S Program.
- Performance Tracking: Assist the Director, Health and Safety with tracking performance indicators and preparing related reports to measure program effectiveness.
- Program Development: Contribute to the creation and implementation of new H&S initiatives, safety minutes, and presentations to support ongoing program growth and improvement.
- Training & Awareness: Conduct refresher H&S training sessions, such as HAZWOPER and Field Work Safety Awareness (FWSA), both virtually and at various BC office locations.
- Resource Promotion: Promote existing resources and tools, such as the EHS management system, to enhance engagement with H&S practices throughout project delivery and workplace safety.
- Incident Response: Collaborate with the Director, Health and Safety to investigate complex or high-risk incidents, near misses, or other safety concerns, and recommend strategic corrective and preventive actions.
- Office Support: Provide guidance and support to WBU office Health and Safety Coordinators (HSC) and Health and Safety Specialists (HSS), including assistance with office Emergency Action Plans (OEAPs).
- Audit Activities: Conduct comprehensive field, desktop, and office audits for WBU projects and office locations to ensure compliance and identify areas for improvement.
- Cross-Unit Collaboration: Work closely with Directors of Health and Safety from the East Business Unit and Private Sector Business Unit, as well as specialized Safety Partners, to advance internal initiatives and drive the continuous improvement of Brown and Caldwell's overall H&S program. Responsibilities may include maintaining internal H&S policies and supporting the rollout of new initiatives.
- Knowledge Sharing: Lead or participate in H&S Roadshows to share best practices and promote a culture of safety across the organization.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's or Associate's degree in Health and Safety (Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Health and Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Safety Management, etc.).
- 2 - 5 years of related construction safety management experience.
- Possess foundational knowledge of health, safety principles.
- Willing/able to obtain a GSP, ASP, OHST, CHST or other professional certification.
- 30-hour OSHA construction safety training.
- Strong understanding of construction hazards and safe work practices.
- Strong understanding and competence with Confined Space Entry permitting during construction.
- Must be able to enter Confined Spaces.
- Possess interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively with multifunctional teams.
- Experience and knowledge of construction safety standards contained in the , 29 CFR 1926 and applicable sections of 29 CFR 191.
- Good technical skills with the ability to articulate ideas and concepts both visually and contextually are essential.
- Strong verbal/written communication skills and ability to work well independently and in team environments.
- Must be positive, flexible, reliable, responsive, self-motivated, able to multi-task and work both independently and in a team environment, and under deadline pressures.
- Advanced skills in MS Office products including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook; proficiency with Internet applications.
- Valid driver's license and good driving record required.
- Must be willing to work in the field year-round, potentially for extended periods of time, and able to perform physically demanding work (see requirements below):
- Ability to work for short periods of time in extreme temperatures including heat and cold.
- Ability to wear required safety equipment at sites including hard hats, steel toed boots (or other approved toe protection), safety glasses, etc.
- Ability to stand for several hours observing and documenting field conditions or critical construction operations.
- Ability to walk slowly around sites of varying size that may have areas of uneven, muddy, and/or rocky ground to perform inspections and take photographs.
- Ability to lift objects 30 pounds.
- Ability to remain alert and vigilant while working around construction equipment and be able to walk swiftly for a short distance to clear an area where a potential hazard is identified.
- Ability to climb stairs (2-3 flights) or ladders (up to 24 foot typically) to access structures for visual inspection.
- Candidate must be willing and able to travel up to 20-30% of the time.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's degree in Health and Safety (Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Health and Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Safety Management, etc.).
- 5 - 8 years of construction safety management experience on large projects.
Salary Range: The anticipated starting pay range for this position is based on the employee's primary work location and may be more or less depending upon skills, experience, and education.
