Overview

UW Credit Union is hiring a knowledgeable and collaborative Senior System Engineer to join our dynamic Systems Engineering team. This team specializes in the administration, support, installation, and maintenance of Server, Storage, and Backup hardware and software systems.

Responsibilities

Monitoring, Support, and Operations
  • Serve as the technical lead and escalation point for tier three support on incidents and requests.
  • Take ownership of all systems troubleshooting tasks such as, but not limited to; server O/S issues, application analysis, storage networking, and backup workloads.
  • Provide support, maintain, and configure server, storage, and backup infrastructure that supports standards and procedures.
  • Monitor and develop reporting on the performance of server, storage, and backup infrastructure against KPI's and/or SLA's. Take preemptive measures to minimize interruptions and meet agreed upon objectives.
  • Coordinate, manage, and collaborate with infrastructure staff, IT Department teams, and organization to ensure smooth and reliable operation of hardware and software infrastructure.
Configuration and Installation
  • Plan and install server hardware and software, storage networking, and backup hardware and software as required per lifecycle planning, UWCU facility growth, or other business or technology drivers.
  • Be an ongoing leader in the change processes as any/all production changes are planned and implemented.
  • Ensure all production installations are thoroughly tested to ensure quality deployments, and when pre-testing is not possible, ensure all peers and IT leadership are aware of the risks and are involved in the decision to proceed or not.
  • Develop and support the policies and procedures for accessing and working within the UWCU Data Centers.
Architecture and Design
  • Stay abreast of industry and technology trends in server and storage infrastructure as well as UWCU systems and individual(s) server needs (both on-premises and in the cloud) to enable appropriate and current architecture and design that is cost, risk and need appropriate.
  • Work with stakeholders, decision makers, and executive team members to define system requirements on project planning and resolve business systems issues.
  • Participate in the overall architecture of all server and storage infrastructure utilized by UWCU and its member customers.
  • Research and remain aware of industry trends for server and storage monitoring and alerting solutions.
  • Ensure UWCU has adequate and current monitoring and alerting tools ongoing, and that these tools are configured in a manner that ensures alerts are meaningful and require a reaction (eliminate false alarms ongoing).
  • Ensure UWCU follows industry best-practice when it comes to product selection/configuration/use, and that the solutions selected and implemented are secure and meet both IT Infosec approval and overall UWCU policies.
  • Take input from industry sources/integration partners, peers and customers to thoughtfully create and maintain a 3+ year data and voice network roadmap to illustrate ongoing short- and longterm plans.
Other Duties
  • Provide appropriate budgeting input to IT Leadership annually to ensure the lifecycle plan is maintained, and anticipated needs for network growth/speed/uptime are accounted for.
  • Develop and maintain appropriate vendors relationships.
  • Participate in learning other technology platforms to encourage first-call resolution in on-call rotation scenarios.
  • Mentor junior members of the team on technical education and training sessions.
  • Other tasks as assigned by the Director of IT Infrastructure.


Qualifications

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or similar technology related program or equivalent experience is required.
  • Microsoft Technology Associate (MTA) or equivalent experience is required.
  • Microsoft Certified Solutions Associate (MCSA) or equivalent experience is required.
  • Microsoft Certified Solutions Expert (MCSE) or equivalent experience is preferred.
  • 6-7 years of experience in Information Technology Server/Storage is required.
  • 5+ years of experience in application support, system engineering, or IT server/storage is preferred.

Skills:

  • Proven analytical and problem-solving skills to address complex technical challenges effectively.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to create detailed technical diagrams and articulate deliverables clearly.
  • Hands-on experience with the following technologies and tools:
    • VMware and AHV virtualization
    • Backup/Restore Technologies
    • Windows Server OS and SQL databases
    • Linux OS and Container Platforms
    • Microsoft 365 and Azure environments
    • Scripting languages for automation and task optimization
  • Knowledge of network, web, and application related protocols and infrastructure (VPNs, vlans, TCP/IP, IPsec, HTTPS, SSL/TLS, routing, switching, firewalls).
  • Knowledge of policy and procedure development, as well as standard IT methodologies.
  • Exceptional time management and organizational skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and track progress efficiently.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively across teams and stakeholders, ensuring alignment and successful outcomes.
  • Ability to be a part of the on-call rotation and travel and work in various field and campus locations throughout the credit union network, as needed.
