The Department of Quality and Safety is responsible for health system-wide performance improvement and quality and patient safety management. Through close interaction with primary and specialty care physicians, the department promotes the highest quality of patient care and patient safety.
The position of Pediatric Surgical Clinical Nurse Reviewer is responsible for abstracting selected surgical cases following the criteria proscribed by the American College of Surgeons National Quality Improvement Project (NSQIP). This is accomplished through high quality clinical screening, data compilation, documentation, and entry of eligible surgeries into the ACS NSQIP database. This position requires a high level of clinical judgment, creativity, organization, clinical reasoning, and priority setting. The candidate must possess some statistical knowledge to analyze risk-adjusted data and have experience in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Power Point to organize the data into comprehensive presentations for faculty, staff, and hospital leadership.
The Pediatric Surgical Clinical Nurse Reviewer will work closely with a designated physician in the pediatric surgical service. The Pediatric Surgical Clinical Nurse Reviewer combines clinical knowledge of health care delivery systems with current quality performance improvement tools and techniques to promote excellence in clinical and surgical outcomes at UCDMC.

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position
- Five (5) years recent experience in pediatric acute care, ED, ICU, NICU or surgical nursing.
- Valid California RN license at the time of hire, without restrictions.
- Must attain NSQIP certification following completion of training and maintain annual recertification
- Graduation from an accredited school of nursing
- Experience and skills to abstract a high volume of surgical cases, maintain abstraction schedule, and perform data analysis of outcomes to identify trends and/or opportunities for improvement.
- Computer and internet skills and experience with intermediate to advance level of experience with MS Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access), familiarity with electronic health record systems.
- Clinical chart review and abstraction experience.
- Demonstrated experience and skills to work collaboratively (through past work experience) with physicians and clinical department chairs.
- Experience and skills to perform statistical analyses and present complex clinical data and information in clear and concise formats.
- Demonstrated experience in clinical patient assessment, planning, intervention, and evaluation.
- Strong communication skills to communicate information and data publicly in front of physicians, department chairs, physician champions, and hospital leadership.
- Demonstrated skills to facilitate clinical and administrative problem solving through performance improvement teams and work groups.
- Knowledge and skills to use mathematics and statistical methods, qualitative analyses, evaluative techniques, and business planning.
- Knowledge of performance improvement evaluation methods, tools, and techniques of problem-solving and change management when using the tools and techniques to implement changes identified through performance improvement.
