Position Summary
-
McHenry County College Speech and Debate Coach provides leadership, instruction, and support to students participating in speech and debate competitions. The coach is responsible for developing a competitive team, fostering student growth in communication skills, and managing all aspects of the team's operations.

Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities
-
- Recruit, train, and mentor students for speech and debate events
- Organize and conduct regular team practices (typically 2+ or more times per week)
- Stay current on state and national rules, procedures, and judging standards for forensic events
- Teach students theories and practical skills in speech, performance, argumentation, and debate
- Oversee team participation in local, regional, and national tournaments, including arranging travel driving to tournaments, and supervising students at events
- Evaluate student performances, provide feedback, and review judge critiques to foster improvement
- Serve as primary school judges at tournaments and recruit additional judges as required.
- Promote the team within the college and local community, including media engagement and outreach
- Manage administrative tasks such as tournament entries, registering for tournaments, and maintaining records of student achievements
- Encourage diversity and inclusion within the team, recruiting students from varied backgrounds
- Collaborate with college administration and faculty as needed
- Commitment to fostering student development and a positive team culture
- Coordinate fundraising and community service opportunities
- Monitor the academic progress of team members and support their overall development, as needed
- Provide support for all on-campus events like tournaments, national showcases, MCC Night, etc.
- Assume additional duties as assigned by your immediate supervisor

Required Qualifications
-
- A bachelor's degree in communications or related discipline
- Experience as a speech and debate competitor or coach
Desired Qualifications:
- A master's degree in communications or related discipline.
- Speech and debate coaching experience at a community college
- Experience in public speaking
- Experience in dramatic interpretation events

- Ability to provide positive reinforcement to improve performance
- Excellent communication, organizational, and presentation skills
- Demonstrated ability to work with minimal supervision and collaboratively as a team member
