What Your Job Will Be Like

Join a dynamic team that helps tackle some of the most challenging issues facing our nation's security! You could be the R&D Laboratory Support Technologist we are looking for to join the High Hazard Operations team!

On any given day, you may be called upon to:

  • This position will work a 2nd schedule (afternoon to evening)
  • Assist in the planning and coordination of daily pre and post-experiment activities.
  • Participate in the develop and implementation of Engineered Safety practices and Work Planning & Controls aligning with ES&H requirements for required work activities.
  • Set up, operate, maintain, and modify commercial and custom-built scientific systems (e.g. Magnetically Insulated Transmission Lines (MITL) and Center Stack).
  • Set up and quality check complex laboratory experiments involving various types of diagnostics.
  • Perform critical lifts with bridge cranes and forklifts, confined space entries, and assist with general laboratory operations (e.g. ordering and stocking consumables, materials movement, housekeeping).
  • This work environment requires extended physical activity while wearing personal protection equipment (PPE), including full Tyvek and respirator (2-6 hours per day); entering and working in confined spaces and non-air-conditioned environments; climbing up and down ladders numerous times a day while wearing PPE; climbing multiple flights of stairs numerous times a day; and bending, twisting, climbing, crawling, crouching, squatting, pushing, and pulling.
  • Assist, cross-train, and shadow any 1600 personnel as need to support facility operations.
  • Individually or with the team, recommend and initiate new concepts and ideas to improve workflow and practices.
  • Transfer or support day or evening shift operational teams, as business needs arise

    Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.
Salary Range

$63,800 - $123,400

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Hands-on experience in the servicing/repair/development of a complex system (electrical, mechanical, electro-mechanical)
  • Experience operating various types of heavy equipment
  • Ability to obtain and maintain DOE Q security clearance

About Our Team

Department 01671, High Hazard Operations, is a united, interdisciplinary team dedicated to ensuring operational readiness, adaptive execution, and systems of systems analysis for scientific campaigns at Sandia National Laboratories Z Machine. Our team is responsible for operating and maintaining commercial and custom-built scientific systems in support of setting up and quality checking complex laboratory experiments involving a diversity of R&D diagnostics. Dedicated quality management, ES&H, and logistics focused teams work together to provide essential mission support for the entire Z facility and its many dynamic mission needs.

Posting Duration

Security Clearance

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs

If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.

If you have a MedPED and you are selected for an on-site interview at Sandia National Laboratories, there may be additional steps necessary to ensure compliance with NNSA security requirements prior to the interview date.

If offered the position, you may be required to demonstrate your fitness to perform certain physical aspects of the position, including lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling.

Position Information

This Limited Term Employee (LTE) position is a temporary position for one year term, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to a maximum of seven years.

Individuals in LTE positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance.
