Position: Milling Machine Operator

Pay Range: $20.00 - $25.00/hr.; based on experience and qualifications


Position Overview

Francis O. Day Company is seeking an experienced and safety-focused Milling Machine Operator to support our asphalt paving and roadway rehabilitation operations. This position is responsible for the safe, efficient, and precise operation of cold milling machines to remove existing asphalt and concrete surfaces to specified depths and grades.

The Milling Machine Operator plays a critical role in pavement rehabilitation by ensuring accurate milling profiles, smooth transitions, and proper surface preparation for paving operations. This role requires strong equipment knowledge, coordination with ground crews and truck drivers, and strict adherence to safety and quality standards.

This is a field-based position essential to successful roadway, commercial, highway, and industrial paving projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Safely operate cold milling machines to remove asphalt or concrete to specified depths and widths.
  • Maintain proper grade, slope, and cross-slope using machine controls and grade guidance systems.
  • Coordinate closely with ground crews, foremen, and haul truck drivers to maintain continuous production.
  • Monitor cutting drum condition, teeth wear, conveyor operation, and water spray systems.
  • Perform daily pre-operation inspections and operator care tasks on milling machines.
  • Adjust milling speed, depth, and drum performance based on material conditions and job requirements.
  • Ensure clean, uniform milling surfaces and smooth transitions at joints and tie-ins.
  • Identify mechanical issues or performance concerns and report them promptly to supervision or equipment management.
  • Maintain compliance with all safety procedures, traffic control requirements, and environmental regulations.
  • Keep the milling machine and surrounding work area clean, safe, and orderly.



Minimum Requirements

  • 3+ years of experience operating cold milling machines on roadway or commercial projects preferred.
  • Strong understanding of milling operations, including depth control, grade accuracy, and surface preparation.
  • Experience operating common milling machine brands and models (e.g., Wirtgen, Cat, Roadtec, or similar).
  • Ability to read grades, follow milling plans, and work within specified tolerances.
  • Mechanical aptitude and basic understanding of milling machine systems (hydraulics, conveyors, cutting drums).
  • Knowledge of job site safety, traffic control, and environmental best practices.
  • Ability to work early hours, extended shifts, and variable schedules during paving season.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work as part of a team.



Physical & Work Environment

  • Outdoor construction environment in varying weather conditions.
  • Frequent climbing on and off equipment and prolonged periods of seated machine operation.
  • Exposure to noise, dust, traffic, and milling debris.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and perform routine maintenance and cleaning tasks.
