JMT Technology Group, a leading provider of geospatial and information technology services and solutions, has an opening for a GIS Technician in the Raleigh, NC area. This individual will use Esri software (ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online) and AutoCAD to collect, create, and edit power utility GIS data, prepare and update maps and other products, and use applications and tools to develop new data outputs. This individual will report to the client's office location in the Raleigh, NC area, a minimum of three days a week.

Immigration sponsorship or support (e.g. H1B, F-1 CPT/OPT/STEM OPT) is not available for this position, except for qualified candidates eligible for the TN visa classification.

Compensation for this position is $60,000.00-72,000.00 annually, commensurate with experience, education and certifications. The provided range is a good-faith estimate based on the requirements described within the job description.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities



  • Review and interpret source data files and translate information into GIS-readable formats.
  • Use desktop Esri apps to edit and maintain vector GIS data in various formats (i.e., file geodatabase, SDE, Portal, shapefile, and published map services).
  • Create, publish, and edit features and manage map services in ArcGIS Online or Portal for ArcGIS.
  • Process data, map requests, and produce high-quality hard and soft copy map deliverables.
  • Assist in developing training materials and provide instruction to internal staff and clients.
  • Assist with testing and deployment of custom GIS applications and tools.
  • Perform routine data validation and QA/QC check to ensure GIS data integrity.
  • Understand and process data and map requests to produce quality hard and soft copy map deliverables.
  • Perform tasks under the direction of a project or task manager and regularly report progress on assigned work.
  • Participate in workshops, training, or vendor presentations involving GIS technology, products, and upgrades.
  • If needed or applicable, perform updates to ArcGIS Online/Portal platform applications, including Story Maps, Field Maps, Experience Builder, and Survey 123.

Required Skills

  • Knowledge of GIS concepts and analytical techniques, including geospatial data creation, conversion, manipulation, and analysis.
  • Knowledge and hands-on experience with utility data and plans.
  • Ability to read and decipher edits in design plans and as-builts using AutoCAD.
  • Knowledge of cartographic standards and principles to develop quality cartographic products for internal and external customers.
  • An understanding of how Esri applications and GIS technologies are used to solve client challenges.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and execute GIS-related tasks efficiently while meeting customer requirements.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to communicate and work collaboratively and effectively with project team members.
  • Proficiency with the Microsoft Office 365 Suite.
  • Strong oral and written skills.

Required Experience

  • Bachelor's or master's degree in geography, GIS, computer science, information technology, engineering, planning, or related field, with relevant coursework in GIS.
  • Minimum of two years of experience utilizing Esri's latest suite of technology, including ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online, to create and maintain geospatial data.


Preferred Experience



  • Experience working in a team-oriented, collaborative environment with team members, customers, and consulting partners from a broad spectrum of disciplines.
  • Experience creating and publishing map services.
  • Knowledge of GPS and mobile technologies for field data collection.
  • Experience using Python or Model Builder to automate repetitive tasks in ArcGIS Pro.


Working Conditions

Work will be performed at the client's Raleigh, NC office location, a minimum of three days a week, with other days at JMT's office or remote work, if approved.

Work is performed in a general office environment. It is generally sedentary but may require occasional standing and walking. The lighting and temperature are adequate, and no hazardous or unpleasant conditions are caused by noise, dust, etc. Field work may be required to collect or verify existing conditions of data being obtained or maintained.
