Controls Engineer

Huntsman is seeking a Controls Engineer supporting the Polyurethanes Division located in Ringwood, Illinois. This position will report to the Engineering Manager.

Job Scope

The Controls Engineer is responsible for implementing, maintaining, and optimizing plant automation and control systems to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient manufacturing operations. This role combines hands-on technical support with continuous improvement initiatives, focusing on equipment reliability, cybersecurity, compliance, and production performance within an industrial manufacturing environment.

In summary, as the Controls Engineer, you will:
  • Modify, maintain, and troubleshoot control systems including PLCs, HMIs, SCADA systems, and industrial control networks.

  • Diagnose automation and controls issues to minimize downtime and improve equipment reliability.

  • Provide support for IT/OT networks, including network segmentation and operational cybersecurity.

  • Ensure compliance with applicable safety standards, electrical codes, OSHA requirements, and internal policies.

  • Collaborate with maintenance, operations, and engineering teams to perform root cause analyses and implement long-term corrective solutions.

  • Serve as the automation lead for system upgrades, new production line installations, and equipment integrations.

  • Support continuous improvement initiatives through data analytics, process optimization, and automation enhancements.

  • Lead control system lifecycle assessments, identifying obsolete equipment, cybersecurity risks, and recommending replacement strategies.

  • Manage vendor relationships related to controls hardware, software, and system integrators.

  • Train plant personnel on new systems, best practices, and troubleshooting methodologies.

  • Manage parts selection and quoting to support control systems and operational cybersecurity infrastructure.

  • Act as a liaison between internal stakeholders, vendors, and contractors to ensure successful project execution.

  • Prioritize and manage multiple projects and work streams simultaneously.

  • Prepare reports, metrics, and tracking tools; ensure documentation and records are properly maintained.

  • Share technical knowledge to develop and enhance the skills of site personnel.

Qualifications

You must possess the below minimum qualifications to be initially considered for this position. Preferred qualifications are in addition to the minimum requirements and are considered a plus factor in identifying top candidates.

The candidate must have an unrestricted right to work for Huntsman in the United States.

Minimum Qualifications

Education required

  • Bachelor of Science in Industrial Controls, Mechatronic Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline.

Experience required

  • 4+ years of controls or automation experience, preferably within a manufacturing environment.

Skills and Knowledge
  • Strong troubleshooting and analytical problem-solving skills.

  • Solid understanding of industrial automation systems and control networks.

  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities.

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within cross-functional teams.

  • Adaptability and willingness to work in a dynamic industrial environment.

  • Commitment to safety, compliance, and operational excellence.

  • Ability to research and apply Huntsman, ISO, and applicable regulatory and professional standards.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Manufacturing industry experience within chemicals or related industries.

  • Experience supporting IT/OT integration and industrial cybersecurity initiatives.

  • Prior experience leading automation-related capital or improvement projects.

  • Familiarity with vendor management and system integrator coordination.

Working Environment
  • Industrial manufacturing plant environment.

  • Regular exposure to production areas, equipment, and control systems.

  • Physical requirements include standing, walking, sitting, climbing stairs, bending, kneeling, and occasional lifting of up to 50 lbs.

  • Typical work distribution: Standing 30%, Walking 30%, Sitting 40%.
