Essential Job Duties
The main function of the Biotechnology ( BIT) laboratory technician is to assist our staff in preparing for weekly laboratory sessions. Our courses are described at https://biotech.ncsu.edu/courses/ and strive to expose students to a variety of cutting-edge molecular biology tools including techniques for studying DNA, bacteria, proteins, viruses, and cell culture. This position offers a chance to transfer your student laboratory experiences into a fast paced, 40 hr/week molecular biology laboratory role, learning from talented people that have an impressive range of interests.

On a weekly basis, the candidate will:

  • prepare, test & distribute reagents to be used in student laboratory exercises
  • accurately record deliveries, then store them appropriately
  • re-stock consumables in 6 laboratory spaces
  • provide husbandry care for model organisms
  • maintain standards of safety across all BIT laboratories


On several occasions across the semester, you may:

  • provide hands-on assistance & instruction to students during laboratory sessions
  • join staff at outreach programs that present science to the public
  • update/author LabArchives protocols used by students
  • assist faculty with their personal research projects
  • offer a fresh perspective about how BIT can elevate its performance
