Job Summary
Involves the facilitation and nurturing of personal religious rituals and spiritual practices for patients, their families, staff, faculty, allied health students (as applicable), and other health care team members. Provides spiritual care and emotional support, including exploration of issues that are of meaning and value and / or issues causing moral or spiritual distress to patients, their families, staff, and others. Serves as a bridge to patient's spiritual or religious community or congregation and to appropriate clergy or religious / spiritual leaders. Offers education and fosters conversation and clarification on cultural, ethical, religious, and other topics / dynamics that can affect patient care, family interactions, and staff performance.
Experienced professional who knows how to apply theory and put it into practice with in-depth understanding of the professional field; independently performs the full range of responsibilities within the function; possesses broad job knowledge; analyzes problems / issues of diverse scope and determines solutions.
Under general supervision, the Chaplain provides direct spiritual care, crisis and emotional support to patients, their families, interdisciplinary team members and allied health learners, supporting primarily the inpatient population at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital-Oakland. The Chaplain will collaborate with interdisciplinary team members to support individualized goals of care and will be part of a team of spiritual care providers fostering spiritual and existential wellbeing. As an experienced spiritual care specialist, the Chaplain offers education and fosters conversation and clarification on cultural, ethical, religious, and other topics/dynamics that can affect patient care, family interactions, and interdisciplinary team and allied health student performance/resiliency. They will assist in developing and maintaining community relations and coordination of community spiritual leaders to meet patient needs via telehealth or in person visits. This position is 20 hours per week and provides clinical care on Saturdays and Sundays onsite (daytime), plus one additional half-day onsite during the week. This chaplain will receive mentoring from the site Lead Chaplain and will work collaboratively with a team of spiritual care providers The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy. Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement. The salary range for this position is $63,700 - $136,100 (Annual Rate). Department Description Spiritual Care & Chaplaincy Education provides multi-faith, emotional, intellectual, crisis, and spiritual support to the patients, parents/guardians, families, visitors, allied health learners and the interdisciplinary staff of UCSF by establishing and maintaining relationships that enable care for people in the context of their spiritual or existential needs and resources, and preparing the next generation of spiritual caregivers through ACPE accredited training.
Required Qualifications
- Previous experience (1-3 years) as a healthcare chaplain, post supervised training, or equivalent
- Advanced chaplaincy judgment, triage and trauma informed skills.
- Full knowledge of principles and practices of delivering spiritual care and short-term counseling to patients and families in a clinical environment. Skilled at providing spiritual support and guidance on the issues of death, dying, grief, loss, and disability.
- Thorough knowledge of a variety of religious and spiritual traditions, and of giving appropriate spiritual care in a multi-faith clinical setting
- Thorough knowledge of the ethical and confidentiality issues involved clinical chaplaincy.
- Flexibility and adaptability to remain calm, and deal effectively with changing situations involving crises and stress.
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with and accept people of diverse beliefs, cultures, ethnicities, ages, and health conditions.
- Ability to work independently with patients and families, while also participating in the healthcare team providing coordinated care.
- Thorough organizational, prioritization, and decision-making skills.
- Thorough knowledge of spiritual assessment models, solid spiritual assessment skills, and the ability to communicate, verbally and in writing, spiritual assessments of patients / families to the health care team
- Demonstrated ability to establish connections with key people quickly and function well in crisis / trauma situations, demonstrating compassion, flexibility, sensitivity, and command when needed
- Demonstrated skill in assessing and meeting the needs of an acute inpatient psychiatric setting-direct work with patients individually and groups, collaboration with interdisciplinary staff
- Excellent communication skills with patients, families, interdisciplinary colleagues, learners, and spiritual counseling skills.
- Bachelor's degree in related areas and / or equivalent experience
- Master's degree in theology, divinity, religious studies, or its equivalent in relevant training and graduate level experience
- Completion of at least 4 units of Clinical Pastoral Education, accredited by ACPE: the Standard for Spiritual Care and Education

License/Certification Endorsement, ordination, commissioning or official recognition by one's affiliation group to function as a professional chaplain. Maintains good standing in affiliation group.
