Hiring Range

The University of California, Merced is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience. The hourly range the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $64.11 to $84.56

About the Job

The Clinical Nurse (RN) provides clinical and educational services in support of the overall population of the Occupational Health Center. Working independently and under direction of the Associate Vice Chancellor (AVC), Health & Well-being and Occupational Health Clinical Lead, implements the nursing care process in accordance with physician and mid-level provider orders and established policies and procedures. Provides nursing services to patients in accordance with the scope of the RN as defined by the California Board of Nursing. This position works in collaboration with the AVC on issues of professional practice and performance. This position works with the AVC and Occupational Health Clinical Lead on issues of efficiency, patient flow, teamwork, and patient satisfaction.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. NURSING CARE: Participates as a Registered Nurse (RN) in the UCM Occupational Health Clinic. Duties include triage, assessment, providing nursing care, and documentation in electronic medical records. Assist the provider staff, as needed. Assist with exams and procedures and prepare patients for procedures in the clinic. Maintain medical supply stock as established par levels and prepare orders with suppliers. Participates in allergy, immunization, travel, and other nursing clinics. Maintains inventory and medical supplies for clinics. Administers injections, IV fluids, medications, and other nursing procedures with adherence to state licensure regulations. Communicates with outside medical providers and organizations, as needed. Organizes clinics and documents care given in electronic medical record.

  2. ORGANIZATIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES: Demonstrates a positive, constructive attitude that facilities the goals and the mission of the UCM Occupational Health Clinic. Adheres to principles of infection control, quality and patient-oriented standards. Demonstrates professionalism, courtesy, and sensitivity in all interactions with patients and staff regardless of cultural, racial/ethnic background, or sexual orientation. Refers administrative inquiries, patient complaints/concerns to appropriate supervisor(s). Maintains patient and medical record confidentiality. Maintains an understanding of the social environment and context of health on the college campus. Adheres to University policies and procedures. Works collaboratively with Occupational Health staff, other nursing staff, medical assistants, and providers, following a team approach. Consults with other members of the healthcare team, as needed. Is responsible for coordinating infection control, employee immunization requirements, N95 mask and other policies/procedures in the Occupational Health Clinic. Coordinates and supports mandates and projects of the Occupational Health Clinic as assigned by the AVC or clinical lead. Develop and provide annual training and competencies of Medical Assistants and Vocational Nursing staff in collaboration with the AVC and Clinical Lead, as needed.

  3. DOCUMENTATION: Maintains professional and organizational standards of documentation. Records content of all patient encounters within the patient's electronic medical record. Charts in a succinct, legible, and accurate manner in accordance with standards of care and organizational standards and policies. Completes documentation for assigned Quality Improvement (QI) projects, inclusive of daily, monthly, and/or quarterly reports. Completes documentation of staff learning needs/plans presented during staff meetings.

  4. QUALITY IMPROVEMENT: Participate in educational activities, departmental committees, research projects, and other health-related projects, as assigned by the AVC or clinical lead. Provide direction and guidance in the proper use, care, and control of material resources. Appraise quality and effectiveness of material and equipment, coordinate the annual, monthly, weekly, daily maintenance and servicing of medical equipment and communicate to responsible individuals. Anticipate potential safety concerns in the Occupational Health Clinic and intervene. Participate in the development of clinic standards, policy, and procedures. Participate in the identification of clinical cost-effective methods. Participating in own professional development by maintaining required competencies, identifying learning needs, and seeking appropriate assistance and educational offerings. Participate in accreditation activities of the Occupational Health Clinic. Identify care needs for patient population. Assist in the development of standards of care, patient education, and staff education to address the needs of the campus community population. Participate in initiatives designed to improve the quality of care or clinical outcomes for the campus community population. Perform chart reviews for QI studies. Demonstrate commitment to patient safety by speaking up about safety issues and changing nurse practices to enhance safety. Share errors through the system reporting mechanisms and demonstrate shared accountability for safe practices. Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Qualifications

  • Three (3) years of clinical nursing experience including one (1) year of ambulatory care/emergency nursing; and

  • Must have current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of California; and

  • Must have current certification in BLS/CPR (required) and Abilities - Position
  • Knowledge of scope of the registered nurse and unlicensed assistive personnel.

  • Knowledge and appropriate application of the nursing process.

  • Knowledge of professional theory, practice, and procedure.

  • Ability to assess nursing needs of acute and chronically ill patients.

  • Able to independently seek out resources and work collaboratively.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

  • Competent in BLS/CPR and/or other specialized life support requirements and maintain certification.

  • Able to record activities, document assessments, plan of care interventions, evaluation, and reevaluation of patient status.

  • Able to use computer and learn new software programs.

  • Able to navigate the entity to provide patient care.

  • Working knowledge of procedures and techniques involved in administering routine and special treatment to patients.

  • Working knowledge of infection control procedures and techniques involved in administering routine and special treatment to patients.

  • Working knowledge of appropriate regulatory requirements.

  • Knowledge of patient rights and responsibilities, rules of confidentiality, and patient privacy.

  • Working knowledge of clinical services policies and procedures.
