Description

Under the direction of the assigned manager, provide hands-on academic support in a variety of academic subjects; work cooperatively with faculty to ensure tutorial objectives are met.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
This is the entry level class in the Instructional Support Assistant series and distinguished from other classes within the series by the performance of tutorial assistance in a variety of academic subjects and the performance of limited and routine duties relative to the assigned area of responsibility.

Responsibilities and Duties

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Provide hands- on academic support in a variety of academic subjects.
  • Confer with instructors regarding academic progress of students; relay students' questions and information to instructors.
  • Maintain accurate and complete attendance records.
  • Provide students with resources, strategies, and skills necessary to successfully complete their work in an assigned subject.
  • Assist instructors to prepare materials for classes; proctor exams; administer oral and written make-up exams; perform general clerical duties such as typing, filing and duplicating materials.
  • Provide training and assistance to student tutors.
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications

Knowledge of:
  • Basic operations and services of a college tutor center.
  • Methods and techniques used to assess student tutor needs.
  • Basic instructional and tutorial techniques.
  • Assigned academic courses at appropriate levels for tutoring assignment.
  • Standard office machines, methods, and procedures.
  • Principles and procedures of record keeping.
  • Proper language usage, spelling grammar, and punctuation.
  • Basic mathematical principles.
  • Effective study skills and test-taking techniques.
Ability to:
  • Maintain a variety of files and records.
  • Identify studying and test-taking deficiencies and recommend solutions.
  • Respond inquiries from students and faculty.
  • Proctor examinations according to instructions.
  • Work independently in the absence of supervision.
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with all employees and others encountered in the course of work.
  • Demonstrate sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, linguistic, and ethnic backgrounds and disabilities of community college students and staff as demonstrated by skills and abilities in cultural responses and cultural humility.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities would be:
Education:
High school diploma or equivalent supplemented with college level coursework in area of assignment.
Experience:
One year experience providing tutorial assistance.
