R&D TECHNICIAN IV - MECHANICAL AND METALLURGICAL TESTING

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES FOR THE R&D TECHNICIAN IV - MECHANICAL AND METALLURGICAL TESTING

  • Assists metallurgists, engineers and internal/external customers in conducting their experimental programs by performing testing in the R&D Mechanical and Metallurgical testing labs.
  • Collect and evaluate data and disseminate results through written reports and oral communication.
  • Set up, operate and maintain various pieces of equipment and make repairs as needed.
  • Perform assigned tasks in a timely, accurate and cost-effective manner.
  • Suggest possible modifications of procedures to improve the productivity of preparation and analysis methods.
  • Develop expertise in assigned areas and is responsible for development of new testing or analysis methodologies.
  • Maintain complete and accurate records, data books and other required documentation.
  • Prepare test reports and other written reports and other required documentation.
  • Works with a "continuous improvement" mindset within the framework of outlined methods in the most efficient manner so that accurate and precise results will be consistently obtained.
  • Develops and leads the training of designated individuals in the skills needed to operate equipment and perform various tasks.
  • Coaches, mentors and answers technical questions from less experienced Technicians.
  • Follow and promote the use of safe working practices.
  • Orders and maintains supplies for assigned area.
  • May publish or assist in publishing technical reference materials.
  • Recommends work to be completed to superior.
  • Expected to lead small sub-teams within assigned area.
  • Perform all other duties and special projects as assigned.

REQUIRED FOR THE R&D TECHNICIAN IV - MECHANICAL AND METALLURGICAL TESTING

  • High school diploma of GED required.
  • Two year associate degree in a technology related field preferred.
  • Ten or more years of related experience.

PREFERRED FOR THE R&D TECHNICIAN IV - MECHANICAL AND METALLURGICAL TESTING

  • Experience in materials testing, including but not limited to areas such as metallography, microscopy, SEM, tensile, hardness, fracture toughness, fatigue, corrosion, and failure analysis preferred.
  • Understanding of metallurgical principles, material properties, microstructures, and materials processing.
  • Operation, maintenance, and development of complex mechanical and hydraulic systems and associated control software is beneficial.
  • Advanced knowledge of scientific principles, standards, methods and practices.
  • Advanced knowledge of metallurgical/laboratory equipment.
  • Complete work following established protocols. Stop and notify management of unusual or unsafe conditions. Participate in continuous improvement safety teams. Ensure coworkers complete work safely and stop others when necessary.
  • Solves complex problems; takes a new perspective on existing processes; makes recommendations to improve standard procedures. Complete metallurgical investigations and testing with minimal guidance.
  • Anticipates and recommends changes to current processes to respond to customer needs.
  • Provides guidance to others and coordinates the work of teams.
  • Acts as a facilitator to resolve conflicts within a team. May be required to act as a team leader within own area or department; does not supervise.
  • Ability to diagnose equipment issues and test anomalies; suggests improvements to procedures or setups.
  • Ability to work directly with vendors to address equipment issues and review supplies.
  • Ability to perform sample preparation and testing tasks.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret test data and microstructures.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize tasks and make appropriate decisions.
  • Ability to work with little or no supervision.
