The Position This part-time position in the Library & Cultural Arts Department is assigned to support the Cultural Arts division. This position will perform paraprofessional level, technical work in a team environment. Essential skills include theater and live performance stage direction and sound, theatrical lighting, video recording and digital streaming support. The position primarily supports programs and events taking place at the Carlsbad City Library on Dove Lane in the following venues: Ruby G. Schulman Auditorium, George and Patricia Gowland Meeting Room, William D. Cannon Art Gallery and Ann Kulchin Courtyard. Additionally, the position may support events at the Georgina Cole Library, Library Learning Center or other city parks and facilities, or at community events such as the Carlsbad Village Fair. Events may take place during regular business hours or in the evenings, Monday through Saturday. Occasional Sunday hours may be requested for community event support. Scheduling is flexible depending on use of facilities and events scheduling. This position reports to the full-time Production Technician in the Library & Cultural Arts Department with daily interaction with the Cultural Arts Manager, Programs and Venues Coordinator, Gallery Curator, Community Arts Coordinator, and other administrative support staff. Part-time positions cannot exceed 980 hours per fiscal year. Part-time employees with the City of Carlsbad receive 24 hours of sick leave per fiscal year. Qualified applicants will be notified only if selected for an interview. Interviews are expected to take place the week of October 20.

Key Responsibilities
-
Under general supervision, perform paraprofessional level, technical work including theater and live performance sound, lighting, video recording and digital streaming support.
- Set-up, operate and support audio, video, lighting and/or digital streaming for events in various venues across the city both indoors and outdoors to ensure highly professional technical production quality
- Safeguard the city's investment in its technical production equipment through proper, professional use in accordance with operating standards and best practices
- Interact with users of spaces, including the public, performers/presenters, vendors, staff and support organizations to respond to requests for technical support
- Provide expert advice to users on various technical issues to ensure positive audience experiences
- Support video archive projects as needed
- Support the safety and comfort of program attendees by upholding the established Library & Cultural Arts Department policies, procedures and rules of conduct
- Exercise sound judgment and work effectively both in a team environment and independently

Qualifications

- Ability to work independently and collaboratively with a diverse team
- Ability to perform multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment with minimal errors
- Skill in current audiovisual and presentation technologies use and operations. Able to learn new technologies and operations as they develop. Examples include:
- Execute basic production set up to include theatrical lighting, video, audio and staging
- Experience with moving light units. Advanced lighting abilities a plus.
- Understand audio/video signal flow and the ability to patch and route signals from source to destination
- Correctly adjust and monitor audio and video levels during performances and events
- Implement digital streaming using established protocols
- Follow written instructions to set-up auditorium and meeting rooms and outdoor spaces to provide requested technical production support for various programs and events
- Strong communication skills; able to adapt to and work effectively with different communication styles
- Work effectively both independently and with others as a team member
- Execute tasks with high attention to detail
- Interact with staff and the public in a responsible and reliable manner
- Ability to quickly learn new technology and become proficient at using required technology tools
- Operate computer programs and applications including Microsoft PowerPoint, Word, Teams and various software programs in networked and stand-alone environments.

Experience & Education
-
Any combination equivalent to the experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain knowledge and abilities would be:
- Equivalent to an associate degree from an accredited college or university or equivalent coursework at a technical or vocational school, in theater or video production; and
- Two years of progressively responsible related experience that includes use of production and presentation equipment.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
While performing the duties of this class, an employee is regularly required to sit for extensive periods at a computer; stand for extended periods of time; transport themselves to various city locations and facilities; lift or carry up to 50 lbs. of equipment independently as well as tables and chairs; push and pull carts to move equipment; reach overhead for supplies; kneel or crouch; occasionally work at heights to place lighting, cameras and sound equipment.
