Job Summary Ensure the safe, efficient operation of yard service for on-time movement of trains. This is a Substitute Yardmaster position and position will be on an as needed basis.
Primary Activities and Responsibilities
- Ensure compliance with all railroad rules and regulations for safety, operations and the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA)
- Supervise the movement of inbound and outbound trains and yard crews for on-time movement of freight consistent with train schedules, and within or below the set budget
- Assign work to yard crews, mechanical, train and engine and maintenance of way employees
- Supervise employees directly engaged in the switching, blocking, classifying and handling of cars and trains within the yard
- Coordinate yard work and prompt movement of cars, making sure cars are placed, pulled, handled and forwarded in accordance with classification and waybill instructions
- Oversee the movement of yard engines in humping cars, movement of freight and building of outbound trains
- Know physical characteristics surrounding specific mileposts, switches, other pertinent locations and learn restrictions on assigned tracks or territory
- Enter, transmit, update, or retrieve information via a computer terminal and document train arrivals and departures
- Prepare brief summaries to describe work status, repairs, inspections or problems encountered
- Coordinate traffic with train dispatcher and crew dispatcher
- Review waybills or other shipping documents indicating material to be loaded or unloaded, tonnage of cargo, type of carrier and planned routes
- Communicate effectively by radio, telephone, computer, intercom or other communication devices
- Miscellaneous activities and responsibilities as assigned by manager
Pay Rate Training Pay Rate based on Collective Bargaining Agreement
Training You will be required to complete an additional 23 days of on-the-job training per desk at your assigned location.
Minimum Qualifications
- High School Diploma/GED
- 18 years of age or older
- Valid Driver's License
- Computer literate using both mainframe and mid-tier computer applications
- Must be able to communicate with diverse levels of employees and management
Preferred Qualifications
- One or more years of supervisory experience
Physical Requirements
- Demonstrate auditory and visual acuity/tracking/inspection
- Sedentary - No lifting over 10 pounds
- Work sitting for long periods of time
- May include physical agility, incl. ability to bend, climb, lift, push, pull, and walk
