The UCI School of Humanities is home to 22 majors and 39 minors that span global cultural and historical studies; languages, literature and media; human dimensions of science and technology; and philosophy and critical theory.

The Office of Undergraduate Study (OUS), housed in the School of Humanities, is comprised of a dynamic team of academic advisors dedicated to providing outstanding guidance and support to approximately 2,000 undergraduate students pursuing Humanities majors. The OUS team provides academic advising and administrative services to majors and prospective majors, coordinates and delivers new student advising, certifies degrees upon completion of all requirements, and oversees specific programs within the School (Humanities Mentor Program, Humanities Honors Program, Humanities House).


Your Role on the Team

As a student services professional, the incumbent will independently advise students via scheduled one-on-one appointments, during drop-in advising, over email, over online chat, and at the front desk; and will provide the full range of student services within the School of Humanities Office of Undergraduate Study. Responsibilities include: providing prescriptive advice and assistance to students on academic/degree progress and major requirements; monitoring and evaluating students' completion of academic/degree requirements; assisting students in determining a major and reviewing change of major applications; reviewing graduation applications and certifying degree completion; advising on moderately complex issues such as multiple degrees, and withdrawal from/readmission to the University; counseling students involved in disciplinary or probationary cases, and advising on procedures, options, and possible outcomes. Receives assistance on more complex issues.


What It Takes to be Successful

Required:

  • Abilities in problem identification, reasoning and ability to develop original ideas to solve problems.
  • Strong interpersonal and written and verbal communication skills, including active listening.
  • Skills in judgment and decision-making, problem-solving.
  • Knowledge of departmental/school/college courses and majors.
  • Basic knowledge of advising and counseling techniques.
  • Knowledge of department/school/college policies, procedures, and requirements.
  • Ability to multi-task.
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • 1-3 years Previous experience in academic advising.

The expected pay range for this recruitment is $25.77- $34.67 (Hourly).
