Brief Summary of Job Duties:

Sr. Construction Inspector Acts as resident inspector on major and minor capital improvement projects as assigned to ensure compliance with Contract Documents. Operate independently in providing inspection services and coordinating outside inspection services. Assist in the inspection of other projects as assigned. Act as code compliance inspector in the capacity of deputy to the Campus Building Official.

Required Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma
  • Five (5) years of field related experience in building or utility inspection and/or construction work, including three (3) years of experience as an inspector or superintendent of major construction work; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • International Code Council (ICC) and/or Division of the State Architect (DSA) certification in one or more construction disciplines (Building Inspector, Electrical Inspector, Mechanical Inspector, Plumbing Inspector, Plan Review, etc.).
  • Experience with UCOP Policies, Facilities Manual, Campus Standards and federal, state and local codes as they pertain to Planning, Design and Construction on the UC Campus.
  • Experience with California Building Standards Codes, specifically building codes (e.g. Title 24, etc.), and DSA laws and regulations (Disabled Access regulations); construction practices in all types of construction (i.e. institutional, commercial, residential, and scientific/technical, etc.).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Preferred Degree in construction management, engineering or related area.

Licenses and Certifications:

  • International Code Council (ICC) and/or Division of the State Architect (DSA) certification in one or more construction disciplines (Building Inspector, Electrical Inspector, Mechanical Inspector, Plumbing Inspector, Plan Review, etc.). Upon Hire Required.

  • Required to hold a valid driver's license, have a driving record that is in accordance with local policies and procedures, and/or enroll in the California Employer Pull Notice Program.

Misconduct Disclosure Requirement:

Job Functions and Percentages of Time:

  • 90% Inspection - Under general direction of the Owner's Representative: Act as resident inspector on major and minor capital improvement projects as assigned to ensure compliance with Contract Documents; make final decisions in the field concerning job conditions; participate in final inspections; obtain compliance with guarantees on completed projects; coordinate preparation of record drawings. Assist in the inspection of other projects as assigned. (1) Become thoroughly familiar with the requirements of the Contract Documents, applicable codes and standards, approved submittals, and all instructions or clarifications issued by the Owner's Representative. (2) Generally act as liaison between Contractor and the Owner's Representative. Keep a written log of communications with the Contractor. (3) As appropriate to the nature and extent of construction, monitor the quality and quantity of the work and promptly report non-conforming work or performance to the Owner's Representative . (4) Prepare a daily report recording time and activities on the Project: weather conditions, the nature and location of work being performed and by whom, the number of workers by trade, verbal instructions and interpretations given by the Owner's Representative and specific observations. Record any occurrence or work which might result in a claim for a change in the Contract price or Contract time. List the names of any visitors, their titles, and time and purpose of their visit. The report shall be prepared for each normal work day or day on which the Contractor performs work and a copy promptly sent to the Owner's Representative and the Design & Construction Services. (5) Prepare a project inspection plan coordinated with the requirements of the Contract Documents and the Campus Fire Marshal. 6) Observe testing and inspection done by the Contractor as required in the Contract Documents; coordinate and observe special testing and inspection when requested by the Owner's Representative, the University, or the Contract Documents. (7) Monitor the Contractor's proposed and actual construction schedules and promptly report to the Owner's Representative discrepancies between the schedules and any conditions which may cause delay to the construction. (8)Periodically photograph the work with special attention to portions of the work which have been or may be rejected or may be associated with a claim or delay. Annotate & catalog photographs. (9) Review in detail the Contractor's Request for Payment and advise the Owner's Representative on progress and percentage of completion of the work. Act as code compliance inspector in the capacity of deputy to the Campus Building Official. (1) Inspect new construction, renovation and repair projects as assigned for compliance with applicable codes and ordinances including Architectural, structural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing and grading work. (2) Prepare records and reports utilizing computer software.
  • 10% Safety / Miscellaneous Other - Comply with University and Department safety programs.
