ReconCraft is seeking an experienced Controls Engineer to design, develop, and test automated control systems for both manned and unmanned maritime vessels. The Controls Engineer will support the full engineering lifecycle, including requirements development, system design, production design, testing, and integration. This role requires strong technical expertise in electrical and control systems, familiarity with maritime standards, and the ability to support complex government and commercial projects. The ideal candidate will also contribute to mentoring engineering and production teams to ensure project success and long-term organizational growth.

Responsibilities (include but are not limited to):



  • Lead design and integration of control systems, including C4I system interfaces, electrical systems, and network architectures.
  • Develop engineering drawings, schematics, one-line diagrams, and technical documentation for client submittals and production builds.
  • Produce shop fabrication drawings, 2D/3D design packages, and bills of materials (BOMs) for prototype and production systems.
  • Refine designs through redline reviews to incorporate lessons learned and improvements.
  • Serve as a technical liaison for controls and electrical engineering discussions with government clients, third-party partners, and internal stakeholders.
  • Support troubleshooting and resolution of design-related production issues in collaboration with project managers and manufacturing teams.
  • Contribute to proposal development, cost estimates, and feasibility assessments for new projects.
  • Review engineering documents for accuracy, compliance with contract requirements, and adherence to industry standards.
  • Establish and maintain detailed processes and procedures for electrical and control system applications.
  • Provide technical guidance to support design reviews, training plans, test trials, and technical data packages.
  • Assist with strategy development to maximize efficiencies across related vessel programs.


Essential Job Qualifications and Requirements:



  • Clearance:

    • Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance.




  • Education:

    • Bachelor's degree in engineering or related technical discipline, OR 10+ years of direct experience with controls and automated maritime systems.




  • Experience:

    • 10+ years in electrical automation engineering, including design, installation, testing, and troubleshooting of networked systems.
    • Strong knowledge of maritime systems (navigation, situational awareness, wired/wireless communications).
    • Familiarity with EMI requirements (MIL-STD-461/464, FCC, EU EMI specifications).
    • Proficiency in programming with Qt IDE, IQAN, C++, C#, and Python.
    • Experience with shock impact resistant system design.
    • Working knowledge of maritime standards (USCG, ABYC, IEEE, ISO, Classification Society).
    • Proficiency with AutoCAD, SolidWorks, and other design tools.
    • Proven track record supporting complex government marine projects.




  • Preferred Knowledge & Experience

    • Current design experience with high-speed combatant craft.
    • Previous government vessel program and contract experience.
    • Familiarity with data bus design standards and protocols (CANBUS, NMEA 2000, J1939, I/O Link, Ethernet, MODbus TCP, ProfiNet, EthernetIP).
    • Experience in shipyard or production environments, including shop floor exposure.




  • Physical Requirements

    • Ability to perform work effectively in both office (primary) and shop (secondary) settings.
    • Occasional shop floor oversight of design integration, testing, and troubleshooting.
    • Physical activities may include standing, sitting, kneeling, crawling, climbing, repetitive motions, and use of visual and auditory acuity.




  • Travel:

    • Approximately less than 10%
