WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

The Technologist III, Specialized Testing will perform high-complexity testing in the National Reference Laboratory for Specialized Testing, a Monday-Friday CLIA-licensed testing laboratory responsible for patient and blood donor testing. Perform FDA-licensed, commercial research-use-only and laboratory-developed tests to support selection of blood products for alloimmunized patients or those at risk for alloimmunization. Operate flow cytometers and automated red cell antigen testing instruments. Perform preventative maintenance of laboratory equipment, preparation and qualification of reagents, interpretation of results and patient report generation. Train and assess technical staff in local procedures. Provide support, development and/or leadership guidance to all volunteers

WHERE YOUR CAREER IS A FORCE FOR GOOD (Key Responsibilities):

  • Perform testing of blood donor and patient samples for quantification of IgA and detection of anti-IgA using flow cytometry.
  • Perform screening of patient samples for platelet antibodies, and when detected, perform antibody identification.
  • Perform automated testing of blood donor samples for red cell antigens.
  • Perform duties associated with supply and reagent management, to include ordering, receiving, inspecting, preparing, and performing qualification activities.
  • Perform quality control and preventative maintenance of equipment to defined timelines.
  • Draft patient and donor test reports and enter results into electronic donor records.
  • Train staff and perform assessor activities.

Pay Information: $39-42/hour

Note that American Red Cross salaries are aligned to the specific geographic location in which the work is primarily performed. Other factors that may be used to determine your actual salary may include your specific skills, how many years of experience you have and comparison to other employees already in this role.

Schedule: Monday through Friday--830am to 5:00pm, or 9am to 530pm

This role is not eligible for relocation assistance

WHAT YOU NEED TO SUCCEED (Qualifications):

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Biological Science or related field required. MT (ASCP) or BB (ASCP) or equivalent certification preferred.
  • Experience: Minimum 5 years of related experience.
  • MLT (ASCP) certification with 7 years of related experience can be substituted

Skills & Abilities:

  • Effective written and verbal communication and strong interpersonal skills.
  • Must possess critical-thinking skills, attention to detail, and promote a quality-driven work environment.
  • Must be able to work independently and on a team.
  • Good computer skills required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong technical knowledge of laboratory equipment operations, maintenance, and qualification testing of reagents and equipment.
  • Previous experience working as a clinical laboratory technologist
  • Hands-on experience in the use of flow cytometry to detect and quantify analytes
  • Proven ability to serve as a mentor, providing guidance, training, and support.
  • Excellent pipetting technique and adherence to precise laboratory practices.

Physical requirements: You must be able to stand repeating the same movements, use hands to handle, control or feel objects, tools or controls. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.This job requires the ability to hear and speak clearly. The employee must be able lift and/or occasionally move up to 15-25lbs. This job may require the employee to be able to bend, stretch, twist or reach out.

This position will require the ability to use stomach and lower back muscles to support the body for long periods of time and the ability to keep or regain the body's balance or stay upright when in an unstable position. Employee must be able to frequently use one or two hands to grasp, move or assemble objects.
