The Genetic Counselor will provide genetic counseling and cancer risk assessment services with coordination of genetic testing when appropriate. The Genetic Counselor communicates effectively with patients, clinicians, employees, and external organizations. Participates in genetics meetings and multidisciplinary tumor boards, acts as an internal and external resource on cancer genetics and contributes to the overall achievement of departmental goals.
The successful candidate:
Genetic counseling and risk assessment
- Perform pre-consult reviews of patient medical and family history information
- Contract with patients to outline topics for review and session expectations
- Construct comprehensive pedigrees using interviewing skills to elicit appropriate information for cancer genetics risk assessment
- Provide risk assessment including mutation probabilities and cancer risks based on statistical, clinical and empiric data
- Educate patients about general genetics concepts, inheritance patterns, genetic testing, and hereditary cancer syndromes (including related risks and medical management guidelines)
- Evaluate patients' readiness for genetic testing with psychosocial assessments
- Coordinate and select appropriate genetic testing based on national, syndrome-specific, and consensus guidelines
- Obtain informed consent for genetic testing
- Utilize culturally sensitive and non-directive interviewing and genetic counseling techniques to promote patient autonomy and decision-making
- Demonstrate and apply knowledge of psychosocial, ethical, financial, and legal issues during genetics consults
- Provide post-test education, counseling and support.
Communication and Documentation
- Accurately interpret and clearly communicate genetic test results to patients and clinicians in a timely manner
- Document genetic counseling and testing information in the electronic medical record and in written communications with patients
- Act as a liaison between patients, clinicians, genetic testing laboratories and insurance companies
- Communicate effectively with stakeholders (should this term be updated to employees or colleagues?) within and clinicians/employees/departments outside genetics/precision medicine
Education
- Obtain genetics continuing education credits in accordance and in compliance with the American Board of Genetic Counseling, National Standards (NAPBC), and relevant genetic counseling licensure laws
- Provide verbal and written cancer genetics education to clinicians, employees, internal and external groups
- Review and apply cancer genetics medical literature and national care guidelines/standards of care
- Participate in the training of genetic counseling students
Internal Meetings, Operations and Research
- Attend multidisciplinary tumor boards, provide input on cases and act as a resource on cancer genetics
- Moderate and participate in case conferences
- Attend genetics team meetings and contribute towards the achievement of departmental goals
- Complete required research compliance training to be able to participate in research collaborations
Job Qualifications
- Master's degree in genetic counseling/medical genetics from a program accredited by the Accreditation Counsel for Genetic Counseling
- American Board of Genetic Counseling Certified (preferred) or Eligible
- Licensed or eligible to obtain genetic counseling licensure in Georgia, Illinois and other states as needed/current licensure in multiple states preferred
- Genetic counseling license in good standing with all currently or previously licensed states
- Clinical experience in cancer genetics preferred, new graduates will be considered
- Experience with telehealth service delivery model for genetics consults
- Interest/experience in clinical research a plus
- Strong organizational, problem-solving, interpersonal skills, and the ability to work as part of a team
- Experience/proficiency with EMR (EPIC preferred), pedigree (FamGenix preferred) and risk assessment models
