National Radio Astronomy Observatory Title: Scientist Open Rank, Assistant Scientist - Scientist (103) Location: NRAO Albuquerque Office, 800 Bradbury Dr SE Ste 235, ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico, United States of America* NRAO Array Operations Center, PO Box 0, SOCORRO, New Mexico, United States of America Requisition Number: 103 Job Family: Astronomy Pay Type: Salary Required Education: SCI Position Description: Position Summary The National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) is an exciting and prestigious research and development organization that plays a vital role in the study of the universe. The Observatory operates a variety of radio telescopes that span the globe, including the Very Large Array (VLA) in New Mexico, the Green Bank Telescope in West Virginia, the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) in Chile, and the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA), which includes 10 stations distributed between Hawaii and the US Virgin Islands. These telescopes are among the most advanced in the world, allowing astronomers to explore the universe in unprecedented detail. The development of an X-Ka wideband receiver spanning 8-38 GHz has begun for the VLBA, enabling new scientific and astrometric capabilities for the instrument. This highly anticipated upgrade will add flexibility and enhance performance by significantly increasing the instantaneous bandwidth available for channelization, enabling access to previously unobservable frequencies, and enabling more efficient and comprehensive spectral studies. The NRAO is seeking a Scientist (open rank) to be the Project Scientist for the VLBA X-Ka Wideband Receiver Project. The appointee will be expected to spend 75% of their time on functional work as part of the VLBA Development Team, with the remaining 25% available for independent research. The primary responsibility of this position is to help oversee the development and integration of a novel X-Ka receiver system being developed for installation on the VLBA. The appointment will be on the NRAO Scientist track, with starting rank determined by the candidate's experience.
