Organizational Unit Overview
The School of Dental Medicine is composed of ten administrative offices and four academic departments. The Administrative units include the Offices of the Dean, Vice Dean, Associate Dean for Student Affairs, Associate Dean for Research, Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs, Associate Dean for Extramural Clinical Practices, Assistant Dean for Dental Education and Informatics, Assistant Dean for Educational Support and Faculty Development, Assistant Dean for Academic Success and the Assistant Dean for Business Operations and Financial Affairs. The four academic departments are Surgical Sciences, Pediatric Dentistry, Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, General Dentistry and Foundational Sciences.
Included in the mission of the School of Dental Medicine is to educate dental care providers (both dental students and dental residents) and to address the oral health care needs of the rural population of North Carolina. The School of Dental Medicine meets these missions by operating dental clinics that provide both educational experiences for the dental students and residents and provides dental care to the residents of North Carolina. These clinics occur in both Ross Hall in Greenville, North Carolina, as well as Community Service-Learning Centers located throughout North Carolina. In order to operate these clinics, appropriate dental auxiliaries and clinical staff are needed.
Job Duties
The Prosthodontics Faculty in the School of Dental Medicine is responsible for teaching Prosthodontics to pre-doctoral students, Advanced Education in General Dentistry residents and residents in the hospital-based General Practice Residency program. The faculty is appointed in the Division of Prosthodontics within the Department of General Dentistry and reports directly to the Division Director of Prosthodontics. The Prosthodontics division works in close cooperation with the other Departments (Foundational Sciences, Surgical Sciences and Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics) and with the Offices of Clinical Affairs, Dental Education and Informatics, Educational Support and Faculty Development, Extramural Clinical Practices, Student Affairs, and Research to support the School's educational programs, initiatives and mission. In addition, the section works closely with other Schools and Colleges of East Carolina University and other components of the University of North Carolina, as well as local/regional educational and clinical programs.
The Prosthodontics Faculty supports the development and implementation of the Prosthodontic aspects of the preclinical and clinical curriculum for pre-doctoral students and supports the clinical education of general dentistry residents.

  • Working closely with the Division Director of Prosthodontics and the Assistant Dean for Dental Education and Informatics in curriculum development and implementation related to Prosthodontics for the general dentist.
  • Coordinating and helping deliver curricular content related to prosthodontics in the simulation lab and didactic settings for the pre-doctoral students.
  • Working closely with the Assistant Dean for Dental Education and Informatics and other informatics personnel to optimize the use of technology to support the section's teaching and assessment programs.
  • Helping ensure that the dental students and residents are competent in the management of patients requiring prosthodontic care.
  • Working with the post-graduate AEGD and GPR programs to deliver curricular content and clinical coverage.
  • Willingness and ability to teach pre-doctoral students in the clinical setting in procedures outside of the field of Prosthodontics in alignment with the SoDM's General Dentistry Model of education.
  • Actively participating in the school's faculty practice.
  • Participating in emergency call.
  • Assisting the Chair of General Dentistry and the Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs in quality assurance and improvement, and compliance efforts.
  • Seeking to serve on committees and boards within the school and professional societies.
  • Attending meetings and representing the School to internal and external constituencies venues as requested by the Chair of General Dentistry or the Dean.
  • Commitment to building teams in planning and to identify and resolve problems.
  • Commitment to conducting basic and/or clinical research, and other scholarly activities that will help qualify for appropriate promotion.
  • Commitment to the Mission and Vision of the School of Dental Medicine, including both a community-based and a generalist model of dental education.
  • Commitment to evidence-based teaching and practice.
  • Performing other duties and assuming additional responsibilities as assigned by the Division Director of Prosthodontics, the Chair of General Dentistry or the Dean of the School of Dental Medicine.

Minimum Education/Experience


  • DDS or DMD (or equivalent)
  • Certification or eligibility for certification by the American Board of Prosthodontics. Current residents in prosthodontics programs accredited by CODA are eligible for consideration provided they will complete their program by the intended start of employment.

License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation
  • Eligibility for dental licensure in North Carolina.
